Embarassed I think Sarah's pregnant. Please help!

Hello.
I'm new to this forum, but I had to join bc i really needed to get some help with my pet yorkie. She had been menstrating about 2 weeks back, and one day she had run out of the backyard only to be seen by mom with a large german shepherd. My mom, brother and I all seperately suspected that she might be pregnant. She is getting heavier and her stomach slightly protruding.

I've had her for the last 10 years, since she was born. To make matters more complex Sarah has a tumor on one of her teets (size of a walnut?) and another tumor on the back of one of her legs. I had her checked out, and the dr. said that if she's not in pain (didn't seem like it), it would be best to just leave it alone.

To be honest, I'm reading these posts on taking care of pregnant dogs and I'm overwhelmed. Heated bed, temperature drop, calcium, x-rays.. I didn't know any of this. Where do I get this stuff? Is it absolutely necessary? I'm on a grad student salary.

Sarah is my life, helping me recover from a life threatening health condition. I just want to do the best thing for her. Has anyone else ever felt this way? If anyone has any advice for a newly pregnant dog (and owner), I would appreciate it tremendously.

A little scared, Sarah's mom.

I am so sorry ... the only thing I know is what I have learned here also. Our Toto has been spayed since she was about 8 months but it would seem to me that there would be something your vet could advise based on her age and that german shepard's size. I would take Sarah to the vet as soon as possible and follow his/her advise! Please keep us updated!

I have to agree with Toto's Mom - I would at least call the vet for advise. I am not sure a Yorkie could give birth to a puppy that size. Although when I was a child, we had a chihuaua mix - about 10 # who had 1/2 basset pups and did fine. Good luck to you and Sarah

I'm far from being an expert but, It doesn't seem possible that a female yorkie mated with a male shepard.!! Did you actually see them "TIED" together?? Last year when I tried to mate my female yorkie, I thought for sure she was pregnant I saw them tie and she seemed to be getting somewhat heavier, being very lazy, etc... But she was infact not pregnant.. Its not until after she stops bleeding that they are actually fertile.. So either bring her to the vet (all he can do at this time is feel for pups) or sit it out and wait a bit.. Either way good luck..

I was telling my mother your story. She said they lost their dog when she was a teenager. It mated with a very large dog, she passed away trying to give birth before the puppies were born. They attributed it to the size of the pups. The vet can do x-rays to see if she is pregnant and probably tell if the size will be to much for her.

I agree with everyone else. This is definately a case where you should consult your vet. Good luck.

Hi.

At the age of your dog, the tumors, and the possibility she has mated-

Please take her to the vet for an abdominal ultrasound, she could be putting on weight for a different reason.

If she is pregnant- you'll have to make a decision:

1. ask the vet to either abort the puppies or spay her
2. take the risk that she will die in whelping/csection and or gestation.

The chances if she is: are extremely slim for you to have her still okay in five months. Do not wait to goto the vet, every day that passes increases the risk.

Good luck,

deborah

I agree with everyone else, take her to your vet asap. This is not a case of "what food should I give her" or "how should I look after her whilst shes pregnant"..this is very serious because if she is pregnant, having these pups could kill her.A german shepard is HUGE next to a yorkie,my m-i-l has an almost 2 year old german sheppard and she weighs in at 110lbs..a yorkie doesnt weigh 10lbs!!,can you imagine how big the pups could be?? It could kill her...
I would take her to the vet as soon as you can and if she is pregnant your vet will probably want to remove the pups..especially if he hears that the father is a german shepard. Also, your baby is 10 years old which is not a good age for having pups anyway.Good luck!

I totally agree with Gina and Bettyanne and Deborah. Take to the vet asap for a diagnosis one way of this other. You can afford not to!

Pregnant help

Our middle kid is pregers and due any day. This is our second run @ this. It can be fun and lots of work. But I don't think that a Shepard would bred with her, to much difference in size, but depending on how long she was out and who else she might have hooked up to who knows - the vet can do xrays between 45 and 55 days to let you know about pup size and how many.

Good luck
