| Is there a general cause for seizures in Yorkies? My neighbor has a yorkie that's about 5 years old. She says that he will have seizures like every 6 or 7 months. Said that he would just be standing or sitting there and start having one then she holds him and he comes out of it good as new. Then 7 months later it will happen again. Does anyone know what causes this kind of seizure? Her vet says he's not sure.

| Usually the cause is unknown. The dog may be mildly epileptic. It can occur in any breed or cross breed. It sometimes doesn't start until after the age of 4 years old. For seizures to occur that infrequent, I wouldn't worry about it I wouldn't bother starting him on any medications for it. Medications are usually advised if seizures are frequent or quite strong. Phenobarb is usually the drug and can be hard on the liver. |

| My Yorkie Holly started having seizures at around 3 years of age, the vet said it was caused by her hormones when she was in season so he suggested that we had her spayed to stop it. She didnt convulse during her fits, she just went rigid and stared, totally unaware of her surroundings, usually lasting between 2 to 3 minutes. We had her spayed but the seizures still continued, not as regularly though, perhaps a couple of times a year, so I guess it wasnt her hormones, we never found out the real reason. She is 16 now and has a heart murmur and is going blind, my puppy is slowing down |

| I have a 13 year old that has had siezures off and on since he was about 5. At first I thought it stress of stressful situations brought on the siezures and let me tell you I did everything you can think of to prevent Cid from ever being stressed. I even have a groomer who comes to MY house for grooming rather than leave him someplace for a few hours. Anyway, the vet told me its like there are snypses that are mis-firing in the brain. I am sure I am not explaining it correctly but basically its like things are not making a solid connection and when this happens, just try to be calm as possible so they will come out of it. If the siezures are really really bad then you will need to controll it with medication. So far I have not started meds because Cid doesnt have them often, just every now and then and for no reason at all. He has had them in the middle of the night when sleeping. |
