| Is Beneful any good?? I'm not so great at determining how healthy dog food is. My parents watched my dog the other day and he got some of their golden retriever's Beneful and now he's a food snob!! He won't eat his Eukanuba without us mixing in a tablespoon of Beneful. I don't mind mixing wet food into his dry food, but I was wondering if the Beneful was any good for him.. And if it isn't, is there a healthy wet food that you prefer? Thanks!!

| Why do you want to feed him a wet food? Is there any particular reason you don't use a dry food?

| As Gina said, it has corn in it which can cause allergies. I don't see anything wrong in mixing wet food in with the dry but I can't help you on a brand as I don't use wet. Some of the others here may have a recommendation for you. Best of luck to you

We do feed him dry food.. Eukanuba.. but he hasn't been interested in eating it dry since he got the Beneful at my parent's house. I had a feeling Beneful was no good for him, so I was hoping to find a decent wet food to mix in with the dry to make it more appealing, but still healthy.

| I've fed Kona both Merrick's Puppy Plate (wet) and Chicken soup for the puppy lovers soul (wet). Both of those seem to have pretty good ingredients. Good luck!!

| Blue Buffalo makes a VERY healthy canned food. It is as good or better than Chicken Soup and Merricks. The best part about it is, you can get it at PETSMART!!!! You don't have to go to a special pet store to get it! |

| Everyone keeps mentioning allergies... how do you know if your dog is allergic to a food? Howie has been oddly well-behaved since he had the Beneful.. could that be an allergy or just the results of my stellar puppy training?? lol

| Be smart, Ingredients dictate what to buy!!! Don't be fooled by some good looking guy playing cute with his dog! Dog food companies want to sell you their dog food! Beneful has a nice looking guy, in a nice looking kitchen, playing cute with his dog. They even have a nice looking container. All they need are good ingredients and the smart consumer will purchase it! Dah!!! You don't let your kids eat pizza or Mcdonalds every night, so why let your dog? Of course the dog's love the junk dog foods, they are sprayed with fats to appeal to your dog. Your little one depends on you to be smart and do the best thing for them, so do your homework read the ingredients and learn what by products are and fillers, notice the order the ingredients are listed as well and make your decision! Good luck! |

| "Water sufficient for processing, beef, wheat gluten, liver, meat by-products, corn starch-modified" These are the top 5 ingredients including water. Wheat gluten, corn-starch modified and meat-by products are all things that you really do not want inside your pups food. The wheat gluten and the corn starch are mostly fillers and stabilizers to give the product shape and consistency. The meat-by-products are useless, as they are there to boost the crude proteins count. Unfortunately, not all crude proteins are digestible, so while the can might says 22 % crude protein, your dog may only be getting 10% that is digestible and usable by his system. Try maybe primal raw mixed in with his food and see if that will do the same thing. At least then he would be receiving quality complete proteins with his kibble. Good luck, I know it is hard to get them to eat what is healthy! |

| This thread is from 2006!!!!!!!! We have come a long way since then but then again, many people do still feed Beneful and hopefully this thread revival will help educate more people!!!! IMO-Beneful is one of the WORST foods you can feed your dog. Again--just my opinion!!! Viv

| I agree, Beneful to me is one of the worst of the worst. Personally, I love Champion Pet Foods company which makes Acana and Orijen dog food, both of which are grain free foods and all natural. I'm also a fan of the Blue Buffalo company. I used their Wilderness formula with Sasha for about 2 years (before switching back to Acana) with no issues. They also have many different formulas of canned food as well. |
