Donating YT 10K Club Member | Anal glands My pup, Trace, is 8 weeks old. Is it possible his glands need expressing at already? He is biting at his butt, (or trying to, he can't reach it) like something is getting him, he stills wants to play, but the hiney problem is bothering him and he stops. He has b.m.'s regularly and they seem a good consistency and firm. He had one this am, but hasn't this afternoon. I read a post where someone said the vet inserts a finger inside their anus, now I can tell you, this guy's is toooo little for anyone to get a finger inside. Does any one know if they can even express the glands at this age? Thanks so much. |

| I can't answer you question I'm sorry, but I have another one that goes along with it. Do all dogs (little dogs) need this done, I know I read that one of the signs is that they will rub their bottom across the ground. Reagan doesn't do this or really show any signs of irritation for that matter, and I was wondering if all dogs need or done or is it just some.

| I don't think all dogs need it done. So if you don't see a sign, I wouldn't worry about it. Did you check his bottom - maybe he has a dingle-berry stuck to his hair. One time Hercules basically stuck his butt in face and I was like eww, it smells like poop. I looked at his butt, and he had some dried poop stuck to his hair. He was letting me know!! haha Hercules had his anal glands secreted when he was small. It didn't seem to hurt him. Maybe check with your vet or call them.

| When they do the anal gland thing, the vet or whoever doesn't stick his finger up the butt; he expresses the glands, by pressing on them, sort of like milking them. I never really wanted to learn, cause it's soooo yucky. |

| Dragging the bum across the floor is a sure fire sign the anal glands need to be expressed. S/W

| I've watched my vet do this to my dogs and she did stick her finger up their butt and the stuff that comes out looks like jelly. She was showing me how to do it myself but after seeing her do it I know I can't. On the dog grooming video though the lady shows how to do it without sticking the finger up the butt, but I'm not doing that either. I let the vet do it.

| There is a thread here where someone attached a link that shows the two ways to express the anal glands. One is pressing the glands outside the pups butt and the other is inserting the finger on the pups butt. Either way im not doing it. I will let the vet do it if Gucci ever needs to. I also read that a sign that the glands need to be express is if the pup rub there butt. |

| Maybe you should give him a bath and soak his rear. My boy had some hanging from him and that caused him to rub his butt. Also, check his poop for worms. That causes an itchy butt. Expressing would be my last option....dogs don't get expressed in the wild. LOL |
