Cry Allergic Reaction!!!

I just took Princess to the vet, she was suppose to have her Rabies and Bordetella, but then they asked if I wanted to have her Rabies done too so I didn't have to come back next month. Even though that's a lot of shots, I decided to.. now I wish I hadn't!

After her shots, we went home and she was fine, THEN she kept rubbing her face on the ground. I thought she was just being her little silly self, but she kept doing this for 20 mins straight. Finally I picked her up and looked at her face and her eyes were SUPER SWOLLEN and SUPER PINK!!!

I was soooo scared I just rushed her back to the Vet and they gave her ANOTHER shot (poor baby!) because of the allergic reaction and said it's gonna make her really sleepy today. They said its common for smaller dogs to have an allergic reaction when you have the Bordetella (Intra Trac) and Rabies shot together.

So just a warning.. if you are going to be in the same situation as I was, be aware that your dog may have an allergic reaction, so in my opinion, you should have them done at different times just to be on the safe side!!

I would never have the bordatello and the rabies shot together. My Jewels had a reaction to just the bordatello. What was your vet thinking if he knew small dogs sometimes have reactions with those two shots together he should have never done it

RoxyJo had the same allergic reaction with her second set of shots. We took her back to the vet who gave her a shot of Dexamethasone to counteract it and she had a reaction to that shot, as well. They kept her for a couple hours until they were sure she was ok, then sent her home and told us to give her a little benedryl. We did and she slept most of the rest of the day. They gave her a shot of the Dexamethasone before they gave her the last set of shots and she was fine. No problems since. This vet told us that she went to a seminar on just this sort of thing and only Dachunds have been known to have the allergic reactions to baby shots, and she had no idea why a Yorkie would react, but, oh well, we'll just giver her something and charge a whole lot more for the visit. This is another reason we are looking for another vet in our area.

I'm surprised that the vet offered to do both shots at once. I know Kona became very worn out with just the booster shots. On the last booster shot she was supposed to also get the rabies shot, but the vet suggested that we wait a week. I'm very happy that we did because both nights she was a little out of it.

Fenley had a strong reation to her second set of shots. She did the same thing - rubbing her face and then it swelled up - so we rushed her to the after hours vet clinic pronto! They gave her a shot to counter-act it. It worked very quickly. When we went for her final set of shots, they gave her the same counter-acting shot 30 mins prior to her vaccines. No reaction!! I hope she grows out of it, but I would probably not take a chance and would just continue to give the precautionary shot first.

Glad Princess is better now!

Thank goodness my vet was extra cautious with Sissy's vaccinations. She actually contracted kennel cough a few days following her bordatella vaccine. ALl her other shots were given singly and at least two weeks apart. The vet said we should do the same thing next year when it is time for boosters, too.

My vet wouldn't do the rabies and bordetella together, I did them a week apart. Call your vet and see if you can give your furbaby benadryll. My vet said taht's OK to give the dog, then she went on about how many milligrams/lb...that was too confusing so I said "How about if I call you and you tell me incase I ever need to, cuz I won't remember" lol.

Default Allergic Reactions

Hi - My vet really wants to give my puppy the leptospirosis vaccine and I have heard that it can cause problems. Any of you know anything about this? Thanks, Donna

What kind of vaccine is leptospirosis and what age do puppies usually get it? I don't remember my dog getting that... or maybe they did but they called it a different name..

Default Leptospirosis

Pets can be infected by eating grass or walking where wild animals have urinated and then licking their feet. We live in a small town and have squirrels, raccoons and birds in our yards and our vet says in 15 years he's never seen a reaction to the leptospirosis vaccine but he has seen dogs die from it. However, I've read on the internet of dogs that have died from the vaccination. It is included in some of the combo package injections that vets give but not in all of them so I was just hoping that others would say that their dog has had it and had no problems. I just don't know what to do. Thanks,
Donna

I've never gotten both shots at the same time. They're little and it can be too much for them.

Leptospirosis has been on the increase in recent years and in varied places. I've always gotten it with no reaction.

I'm glad you started this thread I have to take Nemo in the vet in two weeks and he was suppose to get his second Bordatella and rabies shot together. I'm telling the veternarian to give him one shot.

Which shot should he get first the second Bordatella? Or the rabies??

I brought Freyja in on Friday for her 12 wk. shot (DHPP and Bordetella). I also asked about getting some FORBID for her poop eating. WELL, by Saturday Freyja was having mucousy, bloody stools and she just lay around most of the day. I called the vet, left a message got no reply. Receptionist said put her on hamburger and rice. Thought I'd rather try sugar water and baby chicken (which she is used to). Gave up on the FORBID. Sunday, more bloody poop, so on to hamburger and rice which she gorged herself on and then vomited twice an hour later. She then had 3 runny poops within 30 minutes. I gave her 1/4 tsp. children's Kaopectate and called the vet. Finally got an appointment with another vet who explained that she was having an allergic reaction to her vaccination. She said thank goodness the symptoms could have been worse(!)
So now the poor thing is all worn out and on small amounts of hamburger and rice and Metronidazole to settle her stomach.
The other vet said she is going to red flag Freyja's chart and give her a steroid before the next shots to lessen the reaction.
Phew! I've been a nervous wreck! These poor furbabies are as much concern as real babies!
