| Dexter has een diagnosed with cryptorchid Dexter has been diagnosed with this condition i was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem with there little boys the vet has said he will have to be castrated when he is 12months old this is in julythey will have to open up his tummy too , i am very worried about him going under he is so small what if he doesnt wake up, by the way this condition is where one testicle stays in the body if it is left he has a high chance of cancer, i cried my eyes out yesterday,i will tell you all when he goes in for the op please think about him that day . |

its going to be OK. don't worry. The surgery that he is going to have is very similar to a regular neuter. Sometimes the dogs can do fine with just the one regular incision because the vet is able to find the other testicle. Other times they need to make another tiny incision in the place where female dogs who are getting spayed get theres. the incisions will be small and honestly its not that much more invasive then a regular neuter. The surgery has to be done though. Don't think that you can ignore it. If the retained testicle doesn't come out it can become cancerous. I remember this one case at the hospital i was working at where the owner had a crypt golden retriever and she let it go and didn't neuter him. Well by two years old that dog had such a huge cancerous tumor growing on the retained testicle that it wrapped around other organs and had to be carefully removed. The testicle was the size of a cantelope. ick! So be sure to have that taken care of. | |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | sometimes its genetically passed down from the father, sometimes its not. it just happens. But i assure you, its easy to take care of. Also seeing as how the dog is small, it will be easy to find the other testicle. there's not many places for it to go in a little yorkie |

| I've had 2 dogs that have had a testicle that wouldn't drop - one Yorkie and one Sheltie. I always spay neuter anyway, so it was no big deal. I'm sure your baby will be fine, just make sure your vet is familiar with working on small dogs... BTW - the Sheltie is a healthy 13 yr old now.... Good luck, and remember it will be harder on you than on him...

| From one worrywart to another.... Oscar was a cryptorchid too - he just had his surgery on thursday. They couldn't even feel his second "boy" anywhere and when they went in to do the surgery, it was under his bladder. I was so worried about the surgery, I cried when I dropped him off that morning. He's pretty teeny too at 2.9lbs, and that concerned me, but the operating vet had 25 years of experience working on all breeds, including these little guys. I took him in the night before for the pre-op bloodwork and asked a TON of questions which the vet patiently answered. (Oscar also ended up having 14 teeth pulled as well, so it was a double whammy). Please don't worry! Oscar came through everything brilliantly - all went well and now he has two tiny incisions that are healing up and giving him no problems whatesoever. His teeth removal caused him more discomfort than the neuter. I'm sure your baby will come through everything fine!
