| Help! New Yorkie - Lot's of Questions Hello - I just got a Yorkie puppy this past Friday. Oscar is 14 weeks old and weighs 3 pounds. He is very cute and active. I was wondering how much food I should give him? Right now I am giving him a 1/4 cup of dry food about 3 times a day but he doesn't eat very much. The first couple of days I wet the food down but he seems to like it more when it is dry. Is there a preferred brand of puppy food that is healthier for him? He doesn't seem to be interested to much in his food but likes to eat from our other dog's bowl. He will only eat the puppy food if I feed it to him by hand one at a time and he'll eat a few bites from his bowl on his own after that but then he just stops and wanders over to the other dog's bowl. Is adult dog food okay for him to eat? I don't want to take it away from him if he is actually eating. How much food should he be getting a day? I don't want him to starve! Please help - I'm not really sure if he's starving or not. He still seems to have a lot of energy. Thanks! |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Feeding Isn't it funny how they always want what the other has...lol. Anyhow I have a six and a half month old puppy and he will only eat a little less than a cup of food a day. These guys really don't eat all that much if you ask me. I would also venture to say that he is not eating a lot of his own food because he is sneaking and eating the adult food. The adult food won't do him harm but it might be good to supplement him with some vitamins or something (ask the vet) because the puppy food is loaded with more vitamins and protein that the adult food doesn't have becuase it's not necessary in an older dog. What sort of food are you feeding the older dog.

| As long as he is eating something and is very active, I think you are OK. Loki was very picky about his food for a very long time. Now he gobbles it up. The amount you feed varies by the brand of food. Usually you feed less of the premium foods. If you feed both dogs an "all life stages" food you might have less interest in the other's food? Loki is on Canidae and I feed him about 1/4 cup twice a day. So you might just be over feeding. And Loki is about 10 pounds. I'd say try feeding 1/8 cup 3 times a day. Slowly your dog will be less interested in one of the meals, and then you can eliminate it. I feed Loki twice a day because he will sometimes puke if his tummy is empty. Plus, he eats when we eat and we don't have problems with begging this way. Try one of these foods if you are able to get your hands on them locally. You just need to read ingredient lists - look for the first 2-3 ingredients to be meat. No by-products. No corn or corn products. No grain by-products either, look for whole rice or potatoes. Watch out for Brewer's Rice - it's a nice way of saying "what's left over after take all the good stuff out" Look for a Vitamin E natural preservative. Basically anything you can buy at the grocery store is very bad (IAMS, Eukanuba, Pedigree, Purina, etc.) There are 1-2 acceptable options at Petsmart and Petco if that's all you have. Otherwise buy online, look for a local feed store or a local independent dog store or dog boutique. I prefer Pet Supplies Plus. Here are some brands to get you started - there are probably 30 really good foods on the market, these are just the easiest to find. | You could always give the adult dog puppy food for a while and see if he will eat puppy food. Just a thought. HTH. |

| That sounds great! I'm glad he likes it! Isn't that the neatest thing when you finally find one they like and that you know is good for them?

| Yes from http://www.ruffruffandmeow.com/ He also has one that says "Can I have a treat" 10 times. I even got him a GAP sweatshirt :-) He doesn't have many clothes, just to keep him warm when we walk on cold days, but the ones he has are cute!

| Let me tell you I feed my boxer Coco and Georgie at the same time and it's inevitable that Georgie is in Coco's bowl (all four paws mind you) and Coco fits her big mouth into Georgie's bowl. Fortunately Georgie is almost 1 now so I give them both Candidae chicken and rice. It's good stuff with no by products. I am sure your baby is fine with what he is eating, they are just picky and want what everyone else has

| Science Diet? Hello everyone! Our two new puppies are on Science Diet for puppies small breed. Is that okay stuff for these dogs? I fed my other Yorkie Royal Canine and he loved it. I would like to introduce the puppies to a new food, but have heard that you should do so in quarters at a time. Like for instance the first week add only about a quarter of the new food to the one they have been eating since they started to help see how they handle it. It can cause upsets to their system to start them on something new cold turkey. Any suggestions? Thanks. |
