| Lily won't eat... Does anyone else's yorkie do this? Lily will take one piece of dry food from the bowl and then go to another room to eat it. She might do this two or three times and then she's off to play. I've been wanting to put her on a schedule to help with training but have been free feeding because she eats this way. I tried a schedule for a couple of days thinking she'd realize she needs to eat when I put the food out, but she didn't get it. I was afraid of starving her! I'm thinking of trying to mix some wet food with the dry to see if that helps but I'm wondering how it will affect her poops. Since I'm having problems with housetraining I appreciate the fact that dry food=dry poop=easy clean-up. Will the addition of a bit of wet food create more of a mess? BTW I've tried several different brands of dry food...she's not fond of any of them.

| When Sophie was a puppy...she would do that very same thing alot. I'd also hand feed her. Now that she is a year old...she eats well. With Sophie, she liked company. So when I feed her..I stay in the kitchen doing dishes or something to keep her company. If I leave...she leaves...lol She is a little nosey thing..and doesn't want to miss anything.

| willow will only eat if we hand feed her willow is our beautiful furbaby. she is really spoiled. i cant help it. when i look into those gorgeous eyes my heart melts. heres the problem. i think that we have maybe spoiled her too much, because now she wont eat unless we hand feed her. we have her on a holistic kibble that she likes and will eat if we hand feed her. when we are at work she will not touch her food. the same thing goes when we are home. when we get her bowl and feed her them one at a time she will eat them. i worry because i dont want her going hungry. help please!!!!!!! |

| First of all, a dog wont starve themselves, they have self preservation instinct so don't worry!! Of greater concern is possible low blood sugar/ hypoglycemia for a teeny puppy going too long between feedings. Tripe, is the unbleached contents of a cow's stomach (blech, I know its gross!) is one of the best foods for dogs. Its often used to coax picky eaters or sick dogs into eating. I would recommend mixing canned tripe really well into the kibble, so she can't pick it out. It is meant for supplemental feeding, so you can not use it as the basis of the diet, but its amazing the way dogs love this. I like the brand Tripett the best. Google Tripett and you'll find it. You can order it through their site. Here is an article I wrote discussing the benefits of Tripe for more info. Shiny Happy Coats, Eyes, & Tummies Too! | CupOFdog | Dog Site for Dog People Have you considered a prepackaged raw diet? Nature's Variety and Primal are two great brands that make raw diets for dogs. Far more palletable and much healthier then kibble...And once you switch to something she eats on her own, make sure you train her out of free feeding!!

| No worries!! Let me know how its going...I am super into canine nutrition. I am a raw feeder but use kibble for treats and won't recommend anything I wouldn't give my precious babies. Thats another thing, make sure you aren't filling your baby up with treats between meals and/ or giving to many people snacks. Imagine how tiny a Yorkie tummy is!!!

| Well, it depends on the treats!! First let me say obesity is the number one health threat to dogs. 1 out of every 3 dogs in the US is obese, putting them at greater risk for heart disease, cancers, bone and joint disease and injury and worse. Prevention is the best medicine. I know she is your everything, but remember that you are doing limiting her treats for her benefit, because you love her. I reccomend cutting down using this strategy: a) buy grain free freeze dried protein treats like Halo Liv-A-Littles Chicken. These will limit carbs and thereby weight and they are easy to digest. b) Liv a Little's are $9.00 for a tiny box. The price alone keeps me from over treating!! I wouldn't give more then 3-4 a day. I know its hard, but its so, so worth it. Once a dog is overweight it is SO hard to get them healthy again. Invest more time/ energy/ money into her meals. Use tripe to convince her to eat meals, consider and research raw feeding. This way, you can love her by providing an optimum diet to keep her healthy as many years as possible!!
