| Ear Mites???? Jack has been scratching his ears for the last couple of days. He is flea free, and has no cuts etc. So I think it might be mites. I live a long way from town, and can't get into the vet until Wednesday. Does anyone have a home treatment that I could use until I can get him to the Dr.

| You can try cleaning his ears with a Q-tip and some ear cleaning solution. Our Yorkie guidebook says you can use ear-cleaning solution available from the vet or a pet store (we bought some from Drs. Foster and Smith, and we've seen it at pet stores), or maybe even just a little water. Here's what the book says about ear care: "Using a Q-tip is the easiest way to keep ears clean. Be sure you use a separate Q-tip for each ear. Dip the Q-tip in an ear cleaning solution available from your veterinarian. This ear rinse will break up any wax that may have accumulated inside the ear. Or you can dribble a few drops of the solution directly into the ear. Cover the ear with a cotton ball or two, as your Yorkie will probably shake her head. Grasping the sides of the ear gently, squeeze the folds together up and down. You will hear the liquid make a squishing sound. This loosens the debris. Use a Q-tip or a small piece of cotton to clean the area. If you notice dark brown or black debris on the cotton, a bacterial or yeast infection or ear mites is a possibility. Repeat this procedure the next day and continue until the cotton comes out clean. Be sure to dry the ear thoroughly each time you use the ear rinse. If you are afraid you will puncture your dog's eardrum by using a Q-tip, don't worry. While the ear canal is at the base of the actual ear, the eardrum is actually located much farther down and out of reach. If your Yorkie yelps a bit when you clean her ears, that means the solution feels cold and she isn't accustomed to the sensation. If an infection is present, the area is probably sensitive and the cleaner may sting a bit. If you see your Yorkie shaking her head or scratching at her ears several times, she may have ear mites..." Hope that helps. One of our boys is always scratching at his ears, too, but the vet has never seen anything wrong with them. Hopefully that's the case with Jake, too!

| mites If you can not get to the vet until Wed..flush them with alcohol, massage and clean with the q-tips...you can put oil in them, it smothers the mite..Baby oil works..but I would just clean them right now and let the vet give you the proper meds. No water..causes yeast to grow. |

| Hi! I saw a website ( http://www.dr-dan.com/earmites.htm) that suggested washing the ears out with a warm water and dish soap solution (just a little bit of dish soap ). Another site (http://www.dogstarr.com/ear_mites.htm) said that after the ears are clean use a couple of drops of oil - any oil will do - it will coat the mites and they will not be able to reproduce, the oil also soothes the pet's ears. Anybody tried these approaches? Had any success? Thanks! |

| I washed his ears with warm water and a very very little bit of puppy shampoo, then I used a small q tip and put a drop of baby oil in, it seem to have helped with the irritation. He goes to the vet on Wed so we will see if I was right in my diagnosis. Thank you again everyone.

| Yes, my veterinarian is going to give (sell!) me Revolution on Wednesday, but he wants to check my dogs for HeartWorm -- he says that is sometimes a complication from ear mites -- what do you think about that? Even if I use Revolution I still need to clean out all the old yuk from the ears, right? Nothing replaces that.... Yes, I HATE Ear mites, too! yuk! |

| ears There is nothing wrong in using soap and water on a cottonball to clean the inside, but if you get water in the canal be ready for more ears problems...that is why the vet says to close the ear when we rinse the head.. |

| Acarexx or Revolution? Open question to YorkieTalk Members.... Both Acarexx and Revolution are prescription Ear Mite treatments -- which one do you recommend? Acarexx is placed in the ear and treats only Mites, Revolution can be used to treat mites or also used to prevent fleas and ticks in addition to mites - monthly preventive where Acarexx is for treatment after ear mites are on the dog.... Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks! |

| Well, we went to the Vet and is was NOT Ear Mites. So sorry, all that advise for nothing, or at least not this time. He just had dirty ears, which I could not imagine because he hardly ever goes outside and I just had him groomed 3 weeks ago. The vet gave me a ear wash, and I have to liberally put it in his ear every other day for 4 days, and massage his ears afterwards. Then use a paper towel or washcloth to grab anything that may loosen. Yeah right!, he doesn't know my Jack. It took my husband to hold him down to put the wash in, and then a struggle to do the massaging. He then got away and ran around in circles. I grabbed him to use the paper towel, but he would NOT let me get near his ears. It was only after he fell asleep last night that I managed to stroke his head then inched my way into the outer ear. Oh well, I only have to do this 3 more times, then once a month. Oh, and the little bugger now weighs 10 1b 2 oz. The Doc says he is very healthy and it is not fat so I feel better. Both of his parents were 7 1b. Thank you all again for all the advise.

| That's great news that it's not ear mites! Good luck with the ear wash. I can imagine how hard it will be to get him to sit still for it. We have one like that - hates bathtime and nail clipping - he turns into a monster!
