| Collapses Trachea?!! God I hope not. We just got little Lacy about two weeks ago. She is now ten weeks old. We took her in for her check-up two days after we got her and the vet assured us that she was totally fine and gave her an intranasal bordatella vaccination(kennel cough). After we had her for a few more days, we started to notice that she was periodically coughing, and even sneezing sometimes. We kind of decided that she had allergies or something, but the cough was rather unnerving. They usually come about 3 or 4 at a time, particularly after exercise or excitement. She sounds like she is choking on something huge, but there's nothing. It's like a little hack or gag, almost like a hairball cough in a cat. I looked up what it could possibly be and the only things I found were collapsed trachea or kennel cough. Considering she just got the vaccine for kennel cough and she hasn't been in a kennel or groomers, I assume it's not that (though maybe she got it from the vaccine). Collapsed trachea is what I'm worried about, because the symptoms match. She has a vet appointment tomorrow. Is this a common thing? How bad is it if she has it? I hope she doesn't have to struggle with it her whole life. I know there isn't any real cure though. Other than the coughing, she seems perfectly fine. She is eating, peeing, pooping, sleeping, and playing normally and is a totally happy puppy. She learned sit and come in two days. I really really just want her to be healthy. |

| my yorkie is 3 yrs old and has collapsed trachea. he coughes when i come home or when he gets very excited. i just tell him to relax and rub his back. he settles down and stops coughing. there is a surgery , but i'm scared of little dogs having surgery. my mom's yorkie has a pretty bad case. he needs cough syrup to calm his bad attacks. he is 8 yrs old. |

| First, I want to say your puppy is beautiful. Here's a link about kennel cough saying you can't get it from the vaccine, but she could have gotten it somewhere else since it's very contagious (like at your first vet visit). Let us know how the vet appointment goes. http://www.bcrescue.org/kennelcough.html |

| I think your baby is too young to have collapsed trachea I could be wrong, but I think it affects older dogs. I agree, I think it could be kennel cough. Seek a vet's advice.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I have had 4 yorkies, 3 had collapsed trachea's and Cali had kennel cough for over 3 months. My yorkies with CT all got it at the age of 5 or so. 2 lived until thye were almost 13 and did not die from CT. With kennel cough I have heard that it is just like the common cold many different strains and maybe the vaccine didn't cover this strain. What your describibg sounds like Cali' and Maya's kennel cough. The vet should be able to ease your mind. Let us know how it goes. Good luck!

| The vet said she thinks it's a respiratory infection (possibly kennel cough, she doesn't know). She said it is possible to get it from the vaccine, but it's extremely rare, especially with such a high-quality vaccine. She could have gotten something from the office or from the litter. She prescribed Lacy a broad-spectrum antibiotic for about ten days, then we'll go from there. If she doesn't get better, she might try another antibiotic. She mentioned collapsed trachea and said that if nothing works for the cough, she'll do the tests for that. So for now, she seems fine. Still eating normally and playing lots. She's totally housetrained now and knows sit, come, down, heel, and she's almost got stay. She's really cute and we totally love her. Everyone says she's the tiniest dog they've ever seen lol. |

| What about reversed sneezing? Does it sound like snorting? Dry cough/hacking? Wet cough? I've personally heard kennel cough, collapsed trachea, and reversed sneezing (none are pleasant to listen to). They all have a different sound. Below are what I think each sounds like. I'm not a Doc nor Vet. * Reversed sneezing sounds like a snorting attack. Like after they drink too much water. If you think this is the case, cover your baby's nostrils for a second with your fingers. This will make him/her breath out of his/her mouth. If it stops, it might be reversed sneezing. There's nothing you can actually do at the vet for reversed sneezing. It's scary, and it stinks, but just keep calm and follow the directions above when it happens. * Kennel cough sounds like a little wet cough. * Collapsed trachea sounds dry...like the sound a seal makes. I've noticed (the two dogs that I've seen) that the dogs stretch their head/neck out when they are doing this. Maybe as to try and stretch the trachea to allow more air in. Hope that helps. And when in doubt, go to the vet. I know I do! LOL
