Animal Smiley 019 My 7 month old Presley Will not eat!!

xxxxxxxxx

Please I need help I have a 7 1/2 mth. old male yorkie. Presley. As a baby he had to be force fed by seringe w/ A/D food for 2 months.. he was eating just fine for last 2 months Pedigree puppy pouches.. then 3 1/2 weeks ago went to Vet. For 2 round of Lup. shot and told Vet. Dog has some bad gas. He gave me diff. food.. Long stories short dog had the run's. & since the refusses to eat anything oin its own except treats, carrots apples. Oh nothing in a dish or a bowl has to be on your hand or thrown at him. Took him back to vet, Vet says dog seems healthy , took him to another vet, Vet #2 said same thing. But dog will not eat ..I love him so much my husband has had it says we spent more money on vet bill then this dog is worth. I am hopeless. Bought every kind a food out there dog will not eat. Will not eat any boiled chicken, steat eggs, potatoes., hambuger , tukey...NOTHING!! i feel this is all my fault. I should have never switched his food. Please have you ever heard of this.
My 2 vets. said they are stumped..That the only thing left is to put him in the hospital for internal testing. I do not want to do that, I feel he is to little, and he is not acting tiered or lazy , his behavior is great. Just will not eat. We have to force feed him - his weight is 4 pounds if I get half of a can of anything in him its a good day or 2 table spoon s of meat . But it takes all day to do it... Please help me. My husband is breaking my heart. I will not give up on my Presley. Please help me.

My Name is Angela "Presley's Mom"

Is he losing weight? If he is not losing weight he may just not need as much food. If he's eating 1/ 2 of a can it may be enough.

We started to get into the same thing with our little 3 month old shih tzu. She had to be syringe fed for several days due to not eating because of an upper respitory infection. I got into the habit of syringe feeding her too often and she was always full..never hungry so why eat on her own? Well after several days the meds kicked in and she was feeling lots better. I took her back to the vet for a re-check and the vets advice was to put down a few dishes of food for her...maybe two or three choices to see what she wants. Leave them down for 20 min. then take them up. We do this now but still have to coax her to get eating which takes several minutes (we put her close to the bowls, put some on our fingers let her lick it). I found she will eat well about every 4 hours. Make sure she's good and hungry. If she choses not to eat oh well...sounds bad but I can't spend the rest of my life force feeding a dog. If she doesnt' eat then it's taken up and 3 hours later put down..she's catching on slowly but surely. Keep your chin up I know how frustrating it is. Also, I make sure she gets a pea size portion of Nutri-cal on my finger 3 times a day to keep her sugar levels up! Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!

Try baby food-chicken or chicken sticks. Have you tried giving him a pepcid in the Morning wait about 20min. then give him the baby food.If he likes it add things like boiled chicken. Someone on YT said they put Pup-peroni in the dry food.I guess you put some in a plastic bag and add Pup-peroni wait until the dry food smells like pup-peroni and give it to him.Im going to give it a try on Peanut he is 7months old. And sometimes wont eat for eight hours or more. Keep us updated and Good Luck Sondra

Jig is kind of like that. He goes through a day or 2 where he just won't eat anything but his jerky treats. I've tried so many things with him, I'd write a book trying to tell you them all here. I can tell if he's doing OK by feeling his body. If his bones are sticking out, then he's not getting enough in my eyes. I've force fed him, but I don't like to do it.

Lately, I've tried a tip from the "dog whisperer". He says that most dogs like to work. So, I take him out and run him for at least a half hour. He comes back more willing to try his food. I wouldn't say hungry, but he eats better. Another thing is satin balls. He seems to really like those, but I don't want to become dependant on those. He needs to eat food, not raw hamburger juiced up to make dogs fat.

I know this can be frustrating. I worry about Jig all the time. But, if 2 vets have told you he's healthy. Stick with that. Maybe he's just not a big eater. Just because he doesn't eat a half a can doesn't mean he's not getting adequate nutrition. It takes me at least 3 or 4 days to get through a whole can and I have 2 dogs. He'll eat when he's hungry. Be consistent.

Oh, one more thing.....Jig likes cottage cheese mixed with his food. He's done well with that. I only put about a teaspoon in and mix it around so he can't pick it out.

Good Luck

Animal Smiley 019 He ate ..A little :)
xxxxxx\xxx[/RED]

O.k. i went to petsmart to get him puppy food for the soul. they did not have it, but i spoke to some wonderful people and they told me try liverworst, low sodium turkey, bolony & roast beef so i went to the deli and bought him a doggy sandwich ( no bread) well he ate about a hand full of it mixed up i tried to mix it in with some of his numerous dog food, but he only would eat it alone.. though i do not know if its such a good idea about this type of meal.. but i figured it is a start.. maybe little by little i could incorperate some dog food, if i could only figure out which one he likes.. i wish i knew how to post a picture of him.. He is so sweet, so cute, I truely believe he is a doogy model
thank you for all you advice.. i love this place.. i love all of you.. please help me with any thing else i can do..

Our Mitzi is a picky eater too. I think dogs actually know instictively what they need. I also think that we are coaxed a little into feed our dogs only dog food. I'm 55 and had dogs all my life (my baby carriage was pulled by a German Sheppard). When I was growing up there was no such thing as dog food in Germany. We were happy to have enough people food. So our dogs always got poeple food and they grew old, very, very old and I can't remember them being sick. Even though they were also pure beards: German Sheppard, Giant Schnauzer, Beagle, Dachshound and Leonberger (my Leonberger Inka was allergic to dog food and I fed her rice with oatmeal, tuna, cottage cheese, big bones to chew on, apples, carrots and broccoli all her life and she died with almost 14 years having all her teeth and never being sick.)

Mitzi is 9 years old / 5 1/2 lbs and still likes to be handfed. We also have a little game, where I pretend I'm going to steal her food. She waits for that little ritual and doesn't touch her food until I attacked it.

Did you ever try tuna? Mitzi loves it but not everyday. Also a hard boiled egg might be good. Our vet gave his o.k. to Mitzis diet with rice, oatmeal, tuna, cottage cheese, ground turkey, fish, apples, carrots, broccoli and once in while an oxtail bone to chew on.

By the way... if your dog has a lot of gas give him "Beano" drops. Just squeeze a little bit in his mouth. That helps. (o.k. by the vet!) They taste a little sweet so he'll like them. Mitzi has gas once in a while and she gets really scared. Before I discovered the Beano drops I was often up all night and carried her around like a baby.

Hopefully your little guy is doing better soon and don't give up on him. Dogs are like children, they are not all alike and if he doesn't meet a standard that doesn't mean he is sick or "not normal". As long as he looks healthy, plays, doesn't throw up a lot and his stool is normal, don't worry. Trust him, he knows what's good for him.

Hang in there. I have a 14 week old who is very picky, doesn't particularly like hard food and sometimes will eat something one day and walk away from it the next. It's been very upsetting and he's been hypoglycemic twice. I've been trying everyting. The biggest positive reactions I've gotten from him were for ground beef and rice combined, chicken livers, and cottage cheese. Also -- he wouldn't eat cheese until a couple of days ago, now he will wrestle me for it. These are funny little dogs! The good thing with your pup is that he hasn't become hypocglycemic -- so he MUST be getting enough to keep his blood sugar up. Don't give up.

I am going through the same thing with my 13 week old. He didn't eat when he arrived at our house 11 days ago. Understandabledue to stress of leaving sibling and parents and coming to our new home. Vet suggested adding some canned puppy food which I did and that lasted about 6 days. Then he poo pood that. So now we are feeding boiled ground beef and rice and he can't gobble that up fast enough. Getting the nutrition in them is so important at such a young age. Hope this does not last for 7 months though. Hope you find a solution soon. Otherwise, get rid of hubby!!!

HI Everyone!!
Well Presley os doing so much better, went to a new vet -who told us we have been doing a great job, health wise he is fine.. And that i should give him the food " pedegree puppy pouch" that he use to est again--> and slowly incorperate a better choice like science diet- and i also bought Royal Cainine yorkie bites, a dry food.. he loves them -- the vet also told me i have a small dog he probably will not be more then 4-5 pounds a full growth so-- do not go buy the lable or cans if he eats 4 table spoons of food a day that will be enough, also said there will be days he will eat more if he is more active that day and days he will eat less like the winter when not so much activity!
I just have to say talking to all of you and all of youir advice helped me through a tough time... i also must tell you i bought this spray called bitter apple & presley has stopped eating his leash & bitting my wood molding ! God sent this stiff! And My husband realized that if i had to choose-- well i think everyone knows Presley wins!!!!!!!!!!!
He i believe felt horrible about getting me a dog & him being not healthy,Thank god he is alright.. ya know GOD spelt backwards----> DOG!
love you all!
