puppy age Help! I have a question regarding my puppy. I bought her a month ago and was told she was 8 months old. I just took her to the vet and he says she can't be more than 12 weeks, because she hasn't cut teeth. Can he be right? My little girl has not changed weight in a month. I would assume if she was still 12 weeks she would be growing. Any comments on when your puppies cut teeth would be helpful. SADIES MOM

Just took a look inside my 13 week old and she has all four of her canines and lots of little ones. I'm pretty sure they were there at 8 weeks too. She was 1 1/2 pounds at 8 weeks, 2 1/2 by 11 weeks and is still 2 1/2 pounds at 13 weeks. My children didn't get their first tooth until 15 months old! I actually took the first to a dentist and had an x-ray done to make sure they actually had teeth coming in. Neither of them have ever had a cavity and have beautiful white teeth. They are 18 and 21 now and still haven't gotten their wisdom teeth. They got their 12 year molars at 16.

Are you saying she doesn't have any teeth? Did some quick research and puppy teeth start coming in as early as 2 - 3 weeks - maybe she had to have her adult teeth removed for some reason.

A vet should be able to tell puppy teeth from adult teeth by the number - i think they only have 28 puppy teeth and 42 adult teeth - big difference. They usually start getting in their adult teeth at about 4 months.

Here's a good chart about teeth and determining a dog's age. http://www.ruralareavet.org/PDF/Phys...ermine_Age.pdf

she has teeth, no adult teeth according to vet. She also is starting to get alot of silver on her head. Is that any indicator of age? I am having trouble getting my picture to load.

ok I just looked in her mouth. she has the pre-molars. according to the chart she would be 5-7 months old. The vet also did not open her mouth completely and count.... he just looked at the front and side. her molars are way in the back. Last edited by nurseangie01; 04-20-2006 at 02:58 PM.

Here's is a pic of Kelsey at 12 weeks as you can see she is also starting to turn silver. Maybe you misunderstood 8 months for 8 weeks??? Did they say anything about she already had her puppy shots and rabies?

i just got a bright idea and looked at her papers... according to them she is almost 6 months not 8. that would put her in the right age range according to the tooth chart. thanks my vet must not know. i think he was stunned by her small size. he said he had never seen one that small.

age Talk with the breeder..and the breeders vet..that should clear it up fast. When the breeder took the dam for a check after whelping, again for well puppy check-up before being sold etc..the vet would have had to give a health certificate with age etc. This pup should have some to you with a shot record and at 8 months it should be complete with rabies..no 12 week would have a complete shot record and rabies. If your girl ahs not been clipped her coat will be much longer then a 12 weeks old..heads can start clearing at 8 weeks, so color on the head is not a good indication. Post a pic if you can..best wishes PS...a friend placed a 3 yr old male..the new vet said he thought the dog was at least 10 yrs. My friend got her vet to call the new vet..he was in perfect health, but lost two teeth on the bottom and the vet said no 3 yr old would have lost teeth so young..I guess he never saw a Yorkie before..it can happen!!..this male was only 3 pounds and he lost them after the last dental cleaning.
