| Soft Stool and lots of it (need advice) Dezi, has been having soft stool this week and lots of it. She went from going two to three times a day to 8 or 9 times a day. I feed her dry food (nutro ultra) and she has never had a problem. This past week, I noticed her stool is soft (not diarrhea), but very soft and she has been going more than the usual. I have been giving her treats (Puperoni) for training purposes. I have been giving her puperoni for a while now. She is active and playing, eating and drinking water and does not show any sign of being sick. Do you think the treats are giving her soft stool? Should I take her to the vet? Can I give her sometime to make her stool harder? Please advice. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I would take her to the vet that is a lot of times to be going. You don't want her to get dehydrated. She could have coccidia or it could be from the pupperoni's but I would want my vet to check her out. You could probably just take in a stool sample for them to test. Keep us posted. Good luck

| If she's not sick (and you can usually tell) -- additional fiber in her diet will quickly give her more solid stools. (It is the fiber in our diet that causes us to have firmer stools - a lack of fiber will cause softer stools - and with softer stools, a dog will easily go to the bathroom more often...) One thing that she might eat and enjoy are "Grape Nuts".... the cereal that we eat - it is very high in fiber - and they have a "honey-coated" that I'm sure any dog would love. If your pup isn't sick and will eat only a small handful of these daily for a day or two, I sure you'd quickly notice a difference. If you check out Grape Nuts at the store - (the ones I have are the "little round things.") and they say "high in fiber" on the box. Plus you can check the amount of fiber by reading the box...... Good luck! Carol Jean |

| I think it's the pupperoni. I gave these to my friend's Yorkie in Boston when we lived there and he used to get very soft poo that was slightly reddish in colour. If that's the same with yours, then I'd stop him on the pupperoni. I had the same problem here with Badger one night when I gave him some Pedigree ones that are very similar |

| Just as SnowWa stated, "If she's not sick (and you can usually tell)" -- I'd give some canned pumpkin. It works everytime! Keep water and/or unflavored Pedialyte available at all times. You don't want your baby to dehydrate. Hope your baby feels better soon! |

| Thank for your responses. This site is so great! I think I found out what the cause was. Ms. Dezi somehow got a hold of the nutri-cal tube. She had it underneath my bed. She kept chewing on it (she is teething) and giving her self doses of nutri-cal. As I was vacumming underneath my bed, I noticed the tube was leaking and it had at least 30 or more punctures from Dezi's little teeth. Now she is back to normal. She is a little too much. |

| SDPhotoGirl -- My pups didn't need the extra fiber - their stools are fine - but I had no problem getting them to eat the honey-flavored Grape nuts. I think they thought they were crunchy little pieces of candy. There is no reason they couldn't eat them wet (as we do for cereal) -- but they certainly like them dry - and crunch away like there's no tomorrow. One great trick is take some in a bowl and eat a few yourself while you're watching TV or something. This way - they think they are "people food" (which they are), and before long, they are begging for their share. I suppose you could even toss these in with their wet or dry food --it doesn't matter how they get them....they are healthy and are just extra fiber - which is good for all dogs! Good luck! | Thanks for all your advice. Dezi is feeling better and her stool is back to normal. She is not permitted to get high on vitamins anymore I am going to buy the honey flavored grape nuts. I think she would love it. |
