| Yorkie with possible liver shunt,diet/advice? After 10 months of undiagnosed illnesses a new vet did a bile serum test for liver shunt that came back positive. They have him on Baytril and want me to feed him a vegetarian diet. Of course besides feeling terrible he doesn't like vegetables. Any suggestions on what fruits and vegetables might tempt him. He does like apples but he can't live on apples alone. I cooked potatoes, brocolli, carrot and peas and pureed them and fed him with a syringe. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Elmosmom |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Several of the dog food companies make a low protein dog food for Liver disease. Cali has a mild MVD, or internal liver shunt and I just feed her a low protein diet. What were the Bile Acid levels? Are you considering surgical correction?

| This company offers a vegetarian dog food but I would think your vet would have suggested and given you a prescription for one of the low protein foods available. Sorry to hear about your little one. www.evangersdogfood.com

| The price of the surgery is far out of range of what I can pay. Thats why im interested in long term ways I can deal with this problem like permanent diets and such. I dont know what the bile levels are specifically but theyre high enough the vet described them as "sky high" and made her sure the problem was liver related (shunt, abscess etc) .However, on her ultrasound she couldnt find anything and recommended one of the more advanced tests at a specialist. Im wondering myself why the vet didnt prescribe a low protein diet.. On monday I can ask some of these questions... thx for the input I will update on Monday. |

| Hi, My baby Romeo has MVD. There was a biel test done during surgery for kidney stones on Christmas Day. The test was possitive. They then did a neuclear scan to look for a shunt or MVD. They thought he had a shunt, but after opening him, found he had MVD. He is on a special dog food from Hill's Perscription diet. l/d. There is no protein in this food. He is also on a med called enulose. This is to help with the acids that will build up. I wish you much luck with your baby. I also understand the concern of the cost. To date, we have spent just over $8,000.00. We love our baby. Can't even imagen life without him. This condition will shorten his life. But he is here today and happy to be with us. Good luck with this. Trisha and Romeo |

| Go to Livershunt.com You can get all the information you need to help your baby. It will be expensive either way surgery or not. If the test came back "sky high" surgery might be the only thing that will save your yorkie's life. I do not want to scare you, but go the the livershunt site and read all the information. You should be able to get all kinds of help and loads of information from the livers shunt site. Good luck, and I hope your baby feels better soon.

| Miko has an intrahepatic liver shunt, and his bile acid test results were sky high also. His shunt was inoperable, so he is on meds and a prescription low protein diet that comes only from soy/vegetable. He is doing great with it, and he loves it. He used to be a very picky eater, but now he eats Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Hepatic LS. I would definitely tell your vet to prescribe a food for your furbaby because I dont think just feeding broccoli is enough. The diet that Miko is on is specific for his condition, it has increased zinc and other things that are important for the liver problems that he has.

| Yorkie with possible liver shsunt, diet/advice? Thanks to all of you for your very helpful advice. I have an appointment with an internist on Friday morning. I will be taking all of Elmo's records with me. He is doing great on Natures Recipe canned food and Natural Balance Dry Food. He is eating better than he ever has. Hopefully this new Vet will prescribe either Royal Canin or Hills Science Diet. The lower the protein the better. I will post again after I see the Vet. Thanks again for all your advice and support.
