| Tear Duct problem! My little baby Louie has tear ducts that are not producing tears! I took him to the vet last week because he kept scratching at his eyes, the vet thought it was pink eye and gave him drops, I took him back a couple of days later because he woke up with his eyes swollen shut, the vet referred me to an eye specialist and it seems he has an ulcer in his eye caused by scratching his pink eye infection which came about because his eyes don't produce tears. He is on antibiotic drops and ointments to hopefully stimulate tear production...I have to revisit the specialst in 3 weeks, if there is no improvement he will need surgery to correct the problem Does anyone know about this? He said it was common in yorkies?? Anyone else out there who's baby has the same problem? I feel so bad because he hates all those drops and ointments I have to put in and artificial tears every hour, but I keep telling him mommy is doing this so he can get better. My heart is broken, he's sooo little to have to go through this.

| tear ducts Hopefully, the antibotic's will work..if not get the surgery..dry eyes will be a problem all his life, painful also. As a retired groomer, I have seen so much..some owners fixed the problem and a few didn't..the eyes were always matted and the dog blinked non-stop..eye was irrated, ulcers etc...pain etc. ALSO...speak to the breeder..you are due a refund to pay for surgery, if this conditon is congential, I realize an infection can cause it also..find out what came first. |

| charlie too charlie has this problem as well... luckily, the antibiotics cleared things up. however, the vet did mention a possibility of surgery. it is common in yorkies, from what i've read... try the antibiotics and hopefully that will make all the difference. good luck! the other thing is always trying to keep his eyes clear of excess hair around them... so that bacteria can't get in or his cornea don't get scratched. i trim around charlie's eyes now all the time and try to keep them clean, since this happened.

| Thanks so much for the advice. The eye specialist said that the ulcers and the infection was due to lack of tear production. If he does need surgery we will absolutely have it done, no matter what the cost. I can't stand to see him scratching at his eyes and being uncomfortable. Okay, so maybe the antibiotics will work. And yes, I keep his eye area free of hair as well, I understand that helps a lot in maintaining their eyes infection-free. Thanks again!

| Tear Duct Problem also I also just found out that my Yorkie isn't producing tears in her left eye. The vet put her on cyclosporin drops every day for the rest of her life. These are quite expensive for a very small amount. I hope everything works out well for your little guy. Shelly |

| My SHortie will be 3 in Nov. The vet said since she isn't producing tears herself that she will have to use them forever or she could get ulcers or even posibly go blind in that eye. They did some eye stain tests on her on Tuesday. They also gave her another drop called Gentocin drops for her to use for 7 days. She hates them also. When she sees me getting them she hides from me. It is pitiful and to think I have to do this forever. Good luck and I hope the drops work. I am like you I would do surgery if it would help but the thought of it is so scairy. Good Luck. Shelly |
