When will she go number 2?!?! I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem or if they had any suggestions... How long is too long for a 7 month old to wait to poo? Is it normal for a little pup to take 6-12 hours to poop? I feed Trixie at 4:30 every afternoon and I continue to take her out every hour until around one am. Around 1am I have to go to bed so I put her in her crate. Sometimes she holds it until the morning and sometime she'll poop in her crate. I just don't know what to do, because when I mentioned this to the vet like 2 months ago she didn't seem concerned. But I mean...this isn't right. When she does finally go the bathroom, you can tell it's a struggle to get it out. Does this sound right?

If the vet's not worried then it's probably nothing but is she drinking enough water? How many times a day do you feed her? (she might be digesting slower than average if her meals are very far apart). I'm sure it's the same with dogs as it is with humans. If they're not hydrated enough, they'll get constipated. I noted this with Badger when he was about eleven weeks and upped his water intake after every meal and then every hour or so after until he went toilet. He would drink but I encouraged him to take more by dipping my fingers in the water and letting him lick them (keeping fingers very close to the bowl and dipping them in quickly so he didn't see it as some kind of 'game'). I haven't seen anything written about it but I do notice with him (at 13 weeks) and my girlfriend's Yorkie at the same age, that they drink a lot more (obviously because they're growing and all that water is used to shuttle nutrients round the body). He doesn't necessarily always poop after a meal. Generally it takes an hour two (whereas the books say it should take thirty minutes on average. It's different with every dog I'm sure). Don't worry too much Last edited by Annie&Badger; 04-04-2006 at 08:31 PM.

Thanks for your advice. I'll have to try more water and see how it goes. It's just hard not to worry cuz Trixie hasn't gone to the bathroom in 17 hours, she didn't poop in her kennel last night and has yet to go this morning.

I don't mean to be alarming or perhaps I don't even know what I'm talking about, but surely a puppy should not be encouraged to 'hold it in' until morning? Again, I don't know, but surely that would increase their chances of a kidney or digestive tract infection?

I think with him sleeping-it does not occur to him that he has to go-if he does he hits me in the head & I out him down-but dogs hold it all the time. If you crate a dog-they will hold it or if you let them out to do their business-they will hold it until then

Holding It Can you feed her any earlier or is 4:30 the earliest you are able to? Maybe if she ate earlier then she would eliminate earlier....I don't know, just a thought. Sometimes my puppy (Wicket) who is 5 months old has to go immediately after eating and sometimes he doesn't go for several hours afterwards. There doesn't seem to be any consistency with him, except he always goes first thing in the morning when I take him out. I wonder if your puppy is shy about eliminating in front of people??

| Having worked in medicine for 150 years - I know that some doctors tell their concerned patients that "Some people go to the bathroom three times a day and others go three times a week - and either is perfectly normal --for that person." I'm sure this might apply to dogs also. At least, there should certainly be some variation in how often or when these little guys go to the bathroom. I wouldn't worry about it. My one dog usually goes once a day - and it seems like my younger pup goes several times a day. Whatever!!! My dogs eat well (their stools appear normal) and they are happy, healthy, and playful. | Just chiming in here to add that Buddy only goes about twice a day and it seems in line with everyone here - sometimes he'll take a break during dinner to poop! And sometimes it will be 8-10 hours for him to get it out. I tried the Olive Oil trick, by coating a piece of chicken in it - didn't really seem to work, but his tummy hasn't been doing well, so I'd have to try it again when he's more "normal". I am grateful to hear it seems like the not-pooping-so-much seems OK! |
