| Question Maddie is home after being spayed today. She was pretty much out of it up until now and she keeps licking her incision. Does anyone here know if it's okay or should I stay up all night to keep her from doing that? I will probably have to get a cone or whatever those are called. They didn't send her home with one. |

| They say you could put some of that bitter tasting apple spray on it to keep her from licking. However, I picked another option - I put a big band-aid on his crotch after he got neutered! Alll my friends laughed at me but it worked! :-) http://img11.exs.cx/img11/3522/groggy39pv.jpg

| When I posted last night I wanted to write that I was sure she'd be fine but I am a little superstitious. I know it's silly but I can't help it. I'm happy everything went well.

| you have to make sure Maddie doesn't lick the incision area. My friend's dog kept licking the incision after the surgery and it got infected!!! Mason's vet gave me a cone to put on Mason for 10-14 days post-surgery until his incision heals (well, I had to pay $10 for it). If you can monitor Maddie all day, just be sure that she doesn't lick - if you have to leave her, you should get her a cone. good luck. |

| Just in case you are wondering the plastic cone that is place around their neck to prevent licking, bitting or scratching is called an E-collar or Elizabethan Collar. The first time I heard what it was called I thought it was just too funny but I guess it make sense. Last edited by yorkieagility; 04-06-2005 at 08:03 AM. |

| Thanks everyone, for your help! Maddie seems to be over doing so much licking on her stitches. I think last night when she became aware of it, she got obsessive about it, but today if I see her licking I say, "no lick," and she quits. I will keep watching her and if need be, I can get a collar at my vet's...we have no petco here. |

| I learned on a maltese forum a couple of years ago that a lot of people use those human baby onesie, cut a hole for the tail and put the one piece baby undershirt on them and snap the crotch .

| Wow, Luvmypupster...that is a great idea! I will get one of those. Maddie's good during the day, but for some reason, at night she just wants to lick and lick...causing lack of sleep for both of us! *Yawn* |
