Trachea Collapse I have a 8 month old female who has been diagnosed with a collapsed trachea and pneumonia. She has a goose honking cough at times and also a hairball hacking cough. Can anyone who has had the unfortunate experience of this disease tell me if the that awful hairball hacking cough is trachea related or is it symptoms of pneumonia. I hoping once the pneumonia will go away that hacking cough will too. She has been on the antibodic Baytril. Anyone have experience with it? It seems to be slow going.

I've never experienced this, but I got this info off a website: "If it breathes through the mouth sometimes, or breathes with a raspy sound, or coughs reflexively when you simply rub its throat, it could have a collapsing trachea. If the cough is one or two expulsive outward bursts (forcing air through the trachea to open it), typically with a gag or empty retch at the end, she could have a collapsing trachea. The most common clinical sign of collapsing trachea is a chronic cough. It is often described as dry and harsh and can become quite pronounced. The term "goose honk" is often used to describe it. Coughing is often worse in the daytime and much less at night. The cough may also begin due to excitement, pressure on the trachea (from a leash), or from drinking water or eating" Good luck and keep us posted on your little one's progress.

So sorry to hear that your baby is having symptoms so young. Your vet will want to monitor the baby closely for signs of heart failure and lung problems.. Meds can nwo be used to help give relief. Also, there is a surgery that was perfected in PA at the U of Penn Vet school. There is a maneuver that I have used for many years to break the collapse or spasm. If you would like me to try to describe it to you, please PM me an e-mail addy where I can reach you.. Smoochies to your baby..

romeo has collapsed treachea too. it does sound like goose honking. when he does it and just rub his back and tell him to relax in a soft voice. if it gets bad they have a new surgery to correct it at the university of penn animal hospital. my moms yorkie needs cough medicine to calm his coughing. romeo's case isn't thet bad. thank goodness.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and blessings Its just so frustrating and I feel like I'm grasping for excuses for her coughing. The coughing is more pronounced after waking up from either a short nap or a long nights sleep. I take her in the bathroom and steam her when this happens and she calms down. Like I said its not really a spasm but more like a kaa kaa kaa sound like clicking and them some hacking but no big on going tensed up spasm cough. Running around outside actually stops her cough. She is fine when she eats and drinks. Once she is out and about there is no sign of a cough. What is really more confusing is that she was rid of this cough after several times on zithromax and then just one morning she began coughing and it got worse and developed into a pneumonia. Once again thank you to all!

Ok i'm going thru some issues right now with my Jazzy and what sounds like sneezing to me but could be coughing. At times it does sound like she's hawking up a hairball too. Vet put her on amoix. didn't work. Told me to change her food cause she could be allergic. Did that no real change but she's not doing it as much or maybe i'm just getting use to hearing it. The lady I got her from said it could be kennel cough but it sounds more like a sneeze. Imma give it one more week and back to the Vet we go.

Sneezing Yes, sneezing is also an issue with my dog as well as coughing. She goes through a coughing fit for about 5 minutes and there is alot of sneezing in between the coughing if you know what I mean. Also your head plays games with you because you think your dog is coughing less and responding to the drugs given but its true you do get used to it. Another funny thing that happens. Well I shouldn't say funny but its more like a jinx. As soon as I tell my wife that I haven't heard the dog cough all day the coughing begins. Sometimes I swear they do these things for attention.

Hey - the brother of one of my yorkies also has a collapsed trachea. He was taken to U. of P. and spent a few days there. His mom was told that stress will make it worse. I know he is on meds, too. They do offer the best stent surgeons in the area. I would keep a a close eye on your little one. I know I drive my vet crazy but we DO know our dogs better than they do. Your little one will be in our prayers.

My little girl Holly Is doing ok. I stopped all antibiotics for now. She has been on meds for 4 months now. I just thought enough is enough already you know what I mean? All of these meds can't be good for a maturing puppy right? She still has the cough but mostly in the morning and always after waking up from a nap. Which leads me to believe that maybe she has some kind of bacteria in her throat that my vet can't pinpoint. She is finally scheduled for a spaying and tracheal wash. She sounds very hoarse at first and then during the day after exercising she is a different dog. That is why I want to rule out tracheal collapse. When her airways are opened up she does fine. Anyway we'll see what the wash tells us. By the way any thoughts or experiences with having a dog spayed while still having some type of cough? Also for the unfortunate people that are dealing with tracheal collapse do your dogs still bark or is it hard for them to project their voice? Thanks everyone.
