| Eating Question Sorry, I have a lot to ask this morning as I just found this site and don't know any other Yorkie owners! I want to know - is it just my dog?! Lynx's breeder said we should leave his food out all day and he can eat when he feels like it. Well, that causes him to be really picky and eat a small amount one day and a ton the next. Since he's been sick, I've been feeding him twice a day with a bland diet. He tears it up! I'm thinking of keeping him on a twice a day diet. What about everyone else? Also, he's REALLY picky about his treats! He only likes all natural soft ones. So they're easy to chew. Anyone else have picky treat eaters? I would love to make him some treats but I don't think he'd eat them because they'd be hard! Thanks for reading! Mari |

| I'm a new "future" owner - haven't even gotten my furbaby yet (two more weeks!), but I've been doing a LOT of research and what I read is that you shouldn't leave food out all day because it makes them a little neurotic about food. All the books I've read suggest putting out food several times a day (according to age and weight), giving them time to eat, then picking it back up. Makes sense to me, because if they were in the wild, they wouldn't have the opportunity to eat all day long at their leisure. Also, if he doesn't eat at mealtime, I think I will know something is up faster than I would if he had food available all the time - like if he's feeling bad or maybe he just really doesn't like that food. And, it seems like housetraining would be a lot easier if he's eating on a schedule because he'll be going potty more or less on schedule too. Oh yeah...putting the food out and taking it up also reinforces the idea that you are the alpha dog since you say when they eat. Anyway, that's what I've read, so that's what I'm going to do with my puppy. |

| If it's a puppy, it would be in YOUR best interest to only feed it twice daily at exactly the same time of day 7 days a week. Put water down with the food and leave both for only 15 minutes. He'll learn to eat in that amount of time. Also just put down water every 2 hours for only 15 seconds. No food or water after 4 p.m. BUT at 9 p.m. put down an ice cube in it's bowl and let it lick on it. That will "freeze up" what's inside to help it not go potty during the night. THIS WAS ALL PER OUR TRAINERS SUGGESTIONS! It sure helps to make it much easier to get your puppy to "wait and hold it" till you take him outside to do it's business. It's really helped make housebreaking easy with Missy.

| He's not a puppy - he's a year and a half - but I wish I had thought about this when I first bought him! Once it thaws out (I'm in Wisconsin), I'm going to train him to go outside fulltime. He's used to going on pads so hopefully this will help in the 're-training'. Thanks! Mari |

| Welcome to YT. You have a great site where everyone is very helpful and caring. So ask any questions you may have. I will love to see pics of your furbaby. I used to have Gucci 's dry food out all day but recently I have being picking it up. SO that way I can see how much she is eating. The water bowl stays down all day. Muffies' mom interesting advice from the trainer. I have learn something new. Last edited by Marie; 03-27-2006 at 10:43 AM. |

| See...you got some FREE advice but I paid for it and am sharing that information! haha Anyone that is trying to housebreak a puppy, just putting the water down for 15 seconds every 2 hours is a good trick to help your little one "hold it". You'd be surprised how fast they'll lap up that water. Missy got to where she knew exactly when 15 seconds were up as she'd stop drinking!*!*!

| I leave dry food down all the time for my dogs - Rowdy is an extremely picky eater - has been since the day he came home - I feel that I've begged him to eat almost every day. He's very thin and so if he will eat a few kibbles throughout the day, I am very grateful. I feed him chicken or wet food in the morning and sometimes in the evening. My senior dog will not eat on command either - he picks at the food throughout the day too. I think all dogs are different because our new pup, Rex, is 10 weeks old and he free feeds during the day, with water down all the time. I feed him wet food when I feed Rowdy and he "holds" his pee pee really well - he always goes when I take him out in the grass and he rarely goes in the house. Of course, someone is home with him all day and so he gets taken out at least once an hour. He sleeps with me all night and holds it all night, no accidents yet! I guess I'm just lucky.

| Let me tell you what it used to be like when we "free fed" Muffie for all these years. She would hardly eat - was underweight - plus we never knew how much she was actually eating. Then, we got Missy and was told by trainer to only feed her twice daily at exactly the same time every day and to only leave the food down for 15 minutes. We measure the food out and we know exactly how much she's eating. Plus, now we know WHEN they need to go outside to poop!! We NOW do the same thing for Muffie and we know now how much she's eating PLUS she's gained some weight! We have to feed them in SEPARATE BOWLS so as not to cause any fights over food as that's the # 1 thing dogs fight about. So they have their own bowls plus they eat in different parts of the kitchen. Muffie always finished first and we remove her from the kitchen right away so she won't try to get in Missy's food and cause a fight! Good luck to all of you.

| I have a very picky eater - but, it's not my Yorkie, it's my Bichon. He drives me crazy. My Yorkie will eat anything (except for dog food including dog food treats). I cook a lot of chicken occasionally and cut it up and put it in plastic bags (some in the freezer). I give small pieces of chicken for treats often. The dogs love them, and they are healthy. I'm not sure dog treats are all that good for dogs......healthwise. Carol Jean |

| I feed my dogs in the morning and in the evening - and leave dry dog food out all day. They really don't like it - but I work and like to know something is there if they get hungry....and it's good for their teeth. The end result is that it takes them days to finish a small bowl of dry dog food. Carol Jean |

| from what i have learned, yorkie's are grazers....they eat a little at a time so i leave food out all of the time. but....after 6pm there is no food or water out due to midnight bathroom breaks unless they have been playing around then i will give some water.
