Question Not eating

Hello Everyone,

I am new to the Yorkietalk.com. I just picked up my first Yorkie last Friday. Her name is Abby and she is 10 weeks old. I am having a hard time getting her to eat. I took her to the vet on Sunday because she was so out of it from not eating. The vet gave me a high fatty food and some glucose to take home with me. I have been feeding her with a Syringe for 3 days now otherwise she just doesn't eat and gets really lethargic and just acts totally out of it. Does any one have any suggestions as to how to get her to eat on her own? I have several people checking on her during the day while I am at work but I don't want to inconvenience them for too long.
Thanks for all your help.

Try mixing her food with cottage cheese.

She isn't even walking up to her food dish. Everytime I either put her in front of it or put it in front of her she purposly walks around it. Do you think the smell of cottage cheese will intice her to eat it?

Did you change her food from what the breeder was feeding her? These little ones need to eat 3 or 4 times a day. Are you giving her Nutrical? What did she do with the food the vet gave you and what was the food? It is critical that she eats and sometimes we have to give them foods that are not always the most healthy but they have to eat. You might try Junior Baby Food (chicken & rice) or you might boil up a chicken breast and mix it with rice to see if she will eat that. I also keep on hand Junior Hot dogs and also Little Cesar dog food, anything to entice them to eat.

She was eating Cesear Puppy at the breeder. But once I got her home she seemed dis-interested in everything. She is drinking water though. I tried watering down her food and still not interested. The vet gave me 2 cans of Science Diet a/d and said to feed it to her for a couple of days and then try to switch back and get her to eat on her own. So this morning when I woke up to feed her she was really lethargic and didn't even want to get up and come out of her crate. So I fed her some more SD a/d and gave her a couple of drops of glucose and she seemed to come out of it. I just really need a way to get her to eat on her own while I am work. I have been feeding her 4 or 5 times a day right now. The more I have read it looks like just getting her to eat a little chicken and rice might be the way to go to get her started. Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it, or should I say we both really appreciate it.

Try anything to get ger to eat. I have a 9 month old who is now only eating chicken and hamburger, She goes hypoglycemic if she doesn't eat so I have to feed her whatever she will eat. Please watch her closely they can go down so fast. Please keep us posted.

My little Lady decided she doesn't want to eat her food today. I gave her some Nutrical (she gets that everyday) and when I went home for lunch she ate a few tiny little bites of chicken. The breeder was giving her Eukanuba puppy, so thats what I've been giving her. I just read the post about cottage cheese. Should I try mixing that with her food? About how much should I give her?

I didn't have a problem with my yorkie eating in the beginning. I was given puppy instructions: Your puppy will be nervous for a few days and might have to be hand fed. Make sure your baby eats.
1 can of evaporated milk and 1 can of water mixed together
1 bowl of milk and Gerber rice cereal, until lightly thickened. Refrigerate the rest of milk for future use. If milk is cold, warm in microwave for 20 seconds, just to take the chill off.
Put a bowl of dry food in pen also.
Your baby will also eat some cottage cheese. If you change dog food, it could cause diarrhea. So change gradually. If they do have the runs, give them 3 -4 drops of Imodium or Kaopectate.

I just wanted to say Thanks for everyones suggestions. My boyfriend went to the grocery store yesterday and picked her up some Ceasers for small dogs. She seemed to like it and ate it on her own. I think she still isn't eating enough on her own so I fed her myself this morning. But it was good to see her eat from the bowl on her own.

that's good to hear. That's what I had to feed Cali at first now she won't eat that. Try warming it a little too might help.

When I first got Chloe she would not eat either! I had to try everything! This is wierd but try feeding her off of a small saucer or plate! Chloe is 8 months old and that is the only thing that she will eat off of! I dont know if sticking her head in a bowl scares her or what! I even sometimes had to play with her to get her to eat her kibble! I just roll it on the ground and then she would eat it! Just make sure that she is eating and thats all that matters at this point!

Try boiled hamburger, boiled chicken, plain yogurt, cottage cheese! Also my girls love green beans!

Abby doesn't seem to want to eat out of her dish either. When I got home she was eating out of the container...my boyfriend is still learning. So I put the food in her dish and she went over and checked it out but didn't want any. So I put it on the mat that her food and water dish is on and she ate it up. So its definitely a start and I feel a lot better.
