Help! My Chester is 7yrs old and never had skin problems before. He has only eaten Eukanuba since we got him from the breeder, and no "people food". Since last summer, he can't go more than 3-4 days at the most without a bath before he gets really stinky and his fur gets greasy feeling! I took him to the vet who thought he might have an infection in his skin/oil glands. The vet gave us a medicated coal-tar shampoo and prescribed antibiotics for two weeks. This helped for just those two weeks...now we're back to bathing him every 3-4 days. He is constantly itching, has lots of white flakes in his fur and his skin around his tummy appears red, dry and irritated. He is not losing any hair. I changed him to Science Diet for Dogs with Sensitive Skin almost a week ago, and have noticed that he's taking a little longer than before to get "smelly". I don't know what else to try...anyone have any ideas?

Contact your vet again and ask for different antibiotics. My dog got like that, she had other problems also. We were not able to rid her of the infections, and she died. Not to say yours will die. but the infections might be coming from another problem.

Thanks for the advise....if it doesn't resolve pretty soon we'll go back to the vet!

Just a thought, my mom's cockers were this way. She'd take them to the groomers and within a week they smelled. Turns out the groomer wasn't doing the anal gland thing on them. Now she makes sure they do and hasn't had any problems.

It is quite probably his food that is causing the problem,my Molly was like that and I was feeding her natures menu,a natural food,which obviously didnt agree with her, and switched her to Burns holistic chicken andrice kibble with extra porridge oats,it has taken a week, but now she doesnt smell, and the itching has gone down day by day.You may not be able to get Burns in the USA,but there must be something similar it has no wheat or additives,and I boil a little bit of chicken and moisten it with the juice,she loves it, and is much happier,the oats are great if there poo is a bit runny,Gill

I was told that mixing 50 of apple cider vinegar and 50 of warm water, and rinsing them with this mixture after there bath do not rinse and then either let them drip dry or blow dry on very low, another this to maybe get checked is his ackaline levels, this can bring on itchness, you can get these strips at the drug store, and test the urine first thing in the morning, any thing over 5 is to high, and need to be dealt with.

IMHO - Switching to a high quality dog food could help this problem. Neither of the foods you have your dog on is what I would consider high quality. You can read this article and the one at the bottom more indepth if you want by going to the website. Dogs are no different than human's in that we smell like what we eat and our health is determined by what we eat. Both of these dog foods main ingredient is corn which will cause itching and dry skin. 2 food that are better and that are avilable in Petsmart/Petco are Natural Balance and Nutro. It will take a while if you switch foods before this will clean up your problem (same as if you are a human) but it will help. A good oatmeal shampoo will help in the mean time along with a vet/groomer visit to make sure the anal glands are emptied. Good Luck.
