| Bath time I've had my 2 1/2 month old girl for almost a week now. I tried bathing her once because I needed to clean up some mess on her bottom. I only managed to submerge her bottom end because she would keep trying to jump out and she was shivering pretty badly even before I put her in the warm water. She's not a nervous pup, so I don't know why she seems so scared of the tub. I know she needs another bath soon, but I'm worried it's to stressful for her . Do all pups hate having baths? Are there ways to make them enjoy it? How often do I have to bathe her and are there any tips for washing the face and below the eyes? Thanks for the help. |

| i just this morning bathed my three. What a party we had. I had not bathed my little fourteen week old since I brought her home so she really needed it. She is really skittish about me even brushing or combing her and i can't even touch her head. I filled the tub with enough warm water that it was up to her belly. She can not climb out of the tub. Then I used Johnson baby shampoo and took a cup to pour water on her holding her ears down. I soaped her up and rinsed. no problem but then I got her out and sat her on my lap and towel dryed. She thought she was homefree then I turned on the blow dryer and sprayed conditioner on her. She was scared to death. Trembled like a leaf in a wind storm. She was afraid to move. I did a hiney, eye, girly part and ear trim. By the time I got thru, she thought she was dying. Not fun but a necessary evil. Sorry I don't have any advice for you about how to make it better. Just wanted you to know that the shivering is not always cause they are cold but when they are scared to. Ceeby was next and he was nearly as bad. BUT, he is now almost eight months old and gets better with each bath which is only about every two weeks unless he is really dirty from being outside and so low on the ground. Silk was next and she is an absolute angel altho she is not too crazy about the blow dryer. the other two I have to groom with one hand and hold with the other. Silk, I just set up on the side of the sink and do anything I want to her and she never moves. Of course I sweet talk all of them. The more you bath them, the more used to it they get. I always put enough water in the tub that they can almost swim. Ceeby is the only one that can climb out if I don't hang on to him. |

| Punkin is 10 months old now and we can't get over how well she does in the bath. She doesn't love it but stands there and is cooperative. Our tub has a sprayer and that's what we use. Last week it was really cold and the house felt chilly so we decided to put some warm water in the tub to help keep her warm. Well she liked it, she sat right down in it and peed!! |

| Just talk softly and treat heavly afterwards! Pixie shook like a leaf at first. I felt like a very mean mom. But It has to be done. And the only way to get over it is to do it. Each time you do it it should get easier if you remaim calm and show them that it is not a bad thing your doing. I treat Pixie when we are done. She really looks forward to the treats. Maybe treat at each stage of the grooming if your dog is really hard. After the brushing out before the bath treat, after the nails are cut treat, after the bath treat, after you work on the face treat, after the blow dry treat, and if you do a top knot treat. Make them high value treats! Some dogs will do anything for a high value treat! I use chicken. She goes nuts for chicken! Its like puppy Drugs! They can't ever get enough! And just a taste will have them hooked!

| I started Jeter off in the sink. I think it was much smaller and less intimidating. He did great. I did that until he got too big. Then I switched to the tub, but that was tough on my back ,so now he goes in the shower with me and loves it. Just be sure you have everything next to the sink so you can get it done safely. |

| I use a litter tray as a bath-never been used as a litter tray!I put it on the kitchen bench next to the sink and put a small towel in it to stop her slipping. It is a good height for me.I fill a bucket with warm water which i pour over her with a cup.I have a towel on the bench next to the tray to stand her on to saop, towel dry etc. She hated it the first time, but is getting much better with practice. Now she will stand quite well. She runs around the house like mad to dry off.I haven't used the blow dryer on her yet,as it is summer, but will start to soon,as winter comes. She sits on my knee when i blow dry my hair so is used to the sound.Nail clipping I do when she is sleepy and sitting on my knee. She is better about her daily brushes too now at 4 1/2 months, but does try to chew the comb handle.Just persevere! |

| Max and Abbie didn't like bath time too much at first either however they were less jumpy after a few baths. I use treats during and after bath time-especially when it's time to clean Max's ears. I have to keep giving him treats while I clean them so he's stop squirming. In between baths, I use tushie wipes (they sell them at petsmart near the pee pads) if their bottoms need to be cleaned so they smell fresh. |

| Layla hates having a bath and used to shake every time. Now she has stopped shaking but she tries to jump out and scratches at my arm. But she seems to be getting more comfortable every time. She's now 5 and a half months old, and I try to bathe her every 1-2 weeks. As for cleaning her face, right before I bathe her I use Smart Groom by Wahl Pet Tear Stain Remover. I couldn't get rid of her tear stains with anything until I got this from Walmart, it works great! I usually suds it up and then rinse it off in the bath. I also use ear wipes to clean her ears right after a bath. I guess the only way to make them "like" it is just to make them used to it. If she calms down for even a second praise her and give her a treat when the bath is done.

| I had to wash my 8-week old at least every week when I first got him. He didn't like being bathed (I don't think most puppies do). But he had to be bathed - so, I filled my kitchen sink with warm water, dipped him in, and gently bathed him as "quickly" as possible. After washing, I rinsed him off with warm water from the faucet (he was so little)... and then towel dried him. I didn't use the hair dryer when he was so tiny. I just dried him as thoroughly as possibly (using several towels if necessary). And - made sure he became completely dry soon after that. And - suprisingly - even at that young age - he did the "after the bath going crazy all over" thing. I think the key is "be gentle" and "be fast!!!!!!!" And, of course, you just can't give them too many compliments when you're done - because they are so cute and smell so good (and, I think they know it - even at a young age). Baths aren't fun - but we can make them as enjoyable as possible - with our tone of voice, etc. Carol Jean |
