Question What do you have in your doggie first aid kit and medicine cabinet??

I am needing to update and start a doggie medicine cabinet and a first aid kit. Any suggestions as to what is needed and what you have in yours and what you use it for.

Thanks a bunch!!!

I am not a breeder but have had a sick puppy several times. I have pepto for stomach troubles, kaopectate for diarreha, an extra bottle of unopened pedialyte for when he is not eating and drinking and sevral syringes. 3cc's. This is all I have had to deal with so far. My hubby has the worm medicine in the barn for his dogs and if I need it (which I haven't but once), he will get it. The things I keep are at my vets recommendation.

Here is a list of "stuff" to have in an emergency kit for our furbabies. I found this on a first aid site....

1. Emergency card with vet, emgency vet and local/national poison-control numbers.
2. muzzle or fabric to make one
3. bandage materials (sterile gauze pads, all sizes) - ace bandage, plastic wrap (to seal wounds), blunt scissors, etc.
4. heavy tape (to immbolize)
5. bubble wrap (for splinting)
6. blunt tipped tweezers
7. electric clippers (to trim hair around wounds)
8. needle-nose pliers (to remove larger objects)
9. eyedropper/syringe (to give medicines)
10. rectal thermometer
11. clean towl or small blanket
12. cold and hot packs
13. antiseptic liquid soap (Betadine Skin Cleanser)
14. antiseptic solution (Betadine Solution) to soak or flush wounds
15. Cotton balls
16. Clean washcloth
17. lubricants (KY jelly, mineral oil, etc)
18. Sterile Saline Solution (contact solution) to flush wounds
19. Karo Syrup, honey (for shock)
20. Anibiotic ointment (Neosporin) for wounds
21. activated charcoal preparaton (ToxiBan)
22. 3% hydrogen peroxide for poisoning
23. Syrup of Ipecac (to induce vomiting)
24. Buffered Aspirin - check with vet
25. Antihistamine (Benadryl) for itching - (also a good sedative)
26. Anti-diarrheal (Kaopectate)
27. Styptic Powder (to stop bleeding)

I do not think I would use all of this, so if anyone has anything they would remove or add, please let me know.

Also, all the sites I looked at said to always ask your vet first before you give certain medicines....which I am posting a list of human medicines that are approved for your pets next.

Taken from the Veternarian Secrets RevealedHere are some basic items that all first aid kits should contain.

1. Rectal Thermometer - the newer electronic kind works best. The electronic ones beep when they are finished registering a temperature. They are slightly smaller than the glass kind. They do not break as easily. They can be covered with thin sleeves to halt the spread of germs. They can also be used as oral thermometers. They do have a battery which will need replacing and they are more expensive then the glass ones. [normal canine temperature - 100.5 to 102.5F]
2. Lubricating jelly to lubricate thermometer
3. Gel packs that can be sued for hot and cold compresses
4. Adhesive tape to secure bandages - both non-stick tape and water proof tape
5. Blunt tipped scissors (a must for animal first aid - used for cutting hair away from wounds)
6. Bandage scissors
7. Splints
8. Alcohol swabs to sterilize instruments or small areas of skin
9. Antibiotic ointment for wounds (not for eyes) (ie. Polysporin, for non puncture type wounds)
10. Contact lens solution for rinsing eyes, to clean wounds (water can be substituted)
11. Cotton swabs (ie. Q-tips)
12. Hibitane - a mild antibacterial soap for cleaning skin, wounds
13. Sterile cotton or cotton balls
14. Sterile Gauze Pads (the larger 4" size is better since it can easily be cut smaller if necessary)
15. Rolls of gauze or cling gauze bandage(1-2&quot
16. Hydrogen Peroxide - 10 ml every 15 minutes to induce vomiting in animals that have ingested a non-caustic poison
17. Razor Blade can also be used to shave away hair and abrade the skin following a tick bite.
18. Stockingette to protect bandage on leg or foot
19. Rubber bulb ear syringe - used for flushing eyes, ears, wounds
20. Forceps and/or tweezers
21. Self-adhesive bandage (ie. Vetrap)
22. Numbers for the Animal Poison Hotline & Poison Control for Pets (800/548-2423 or 900/680-0000 both numbers charge a fee). The National Poison Control Hotlines for humans should also be included.
