| Vaccinations-liver shunt Okay everyone, I know this topic has been discussed extensively on this forum, but my situation is a bit different because Miko has a liver shunt. Miko has an appt. to get his rabies shot this sunday...The vet said that it would be a rabies, lyme, and giardia...Are these too many vaccines for him at once regardless of the liver shunt? Also, knowing that he does have a liver shunt, does anyone know how this will affect him? My regular vet whom I trust 100% is in Tampa, and we recently moved further south, so the appt. is not with my regular vet. It's almost impossible for me to get off work to take him 2.5 hrs north just for shots.. I will call my regular vet in the morning to ask him all these questions, but I wanted to see if I could get any input from you guys in the meantime...Miko is 1 yr and 9 mos old.

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | Being new to these forums, I don't know "how extensively" the vaccine issue has been discussed. But, I can tell you I have major reservations about putting chemicals into the underdeveloped neurological system of ANY baby. I'm struggling with this, myself. Do I let Abi have her next booster - or "no"? One thing I would definitely do is ask the vet what kind of binder is in the multiple vaccine? Is it thimerasal (mercury)? Think twice....

| I have a 7 yr. old yorkie that has a liver shunt problem. It is controlled by diet. He has not had any surgery. I also have reservations about the effect vaccinations have on my little furbaby. This year I asked them to space out the shots and not give them all at once. And he did not have a single problem. |

Please talk to a homeopathic vet and ask the vet for a titer test if he has already had a rabies shot. Most are good for three years and with your babie's compromised system I would not give him any more unless absolutely necessary. When was his last rabies or is this his first? The titer test is a blood test to determine his immune levels. I wouldn't evn consider the giardia and lyme vaccines at this pint. They are unnecessary imo. There are nosodes you can give instead of vaccines if you are at worried about these diseases. | |

| JMO.With your little guys existing health problems I would hold off on those vaccines that aren't absolutly necessary, I think I would include both lymes and giardia in that group. UNLESS you think he may be getting alot of ticks or be exposed to giardia. If he is a housedog as I am sure he is and this time of year(I don't know your location) there are no ticks out anyway. Good luck. |

| I would NEVER get all of those vaccines at the same time even on a healthy Yorkie. I was at my vet with Cruiser anda woman came in with a toy Poodle who was very sick from a reaction to a Lyme vaccine. If the puppy had several or combo vaccs, they would not have known which was the culprit. The more we attack their immune systems the more trouble we can have.. Two weeks apart is my suggestion. BUT, your case is special and your old vet is the one to make the call. |

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | I stopped giving my 10 y/o mix (shih-tzu/maltese/silky) shots years ago. I only give what's absolutely mandatory by law. I learned the hard lesson about vaccines 30 years past, when my precious daughter was injured by the dpt vaccine. She is now multi-challenged (severely retarded, non-ambulatory and non-verbal). We cannot prove it; but have strong feelings she was affected by the thimerasal in the 3-in-1 vaccine. You may read our story, here .

| Miko's last rabies shot was at the end of '04, and the vet that gave it to him (not my reg vet) said that it lasts only a yr. Also, I wonder if the lyme vaccine is necessary since he is an inside dog...I am in Florida though, so I would hate for a tick to get him somehow, and him not be vaccinated for it lyme. As far as Giardia goes, I don't know either...I do know that I will not let them do all the vaccines at once though. Like you all said, it could be very dangerous, and I am not willing to put my baby's life in any kind of danger. Oh my goodness, abbies mom, I read your story, and I am sooo sorry to hear about what happened to your precious daughter...I had no idea that could even happen. I will keep your family in my prayers. Thanks for sharing your story... I will call my vet this morning and see what he says...

| You should be fine. We are also in Florida. Matise has a liver shunt. We have spoke about it before. He recently had his first vacs since diagnosing his shunt. He did Great. He got everything including lepto. He didn't have one side affect. I consulted my Liver Shunt surgeon prior to making the appointment and he said that he did not feel there was any reason why Matise could not receive his vaccinations. My regular vet who gave the vaccinations did advise that we should not plan anything and stay with him for 24 hours after vaccinations just due to regular concerns ie: fever and other reactions, etc. about a dog being vaccinated but nothing in connection to his shunt. Good Luck and it is truly you dicision you should do what is right for you and your baby.

| Thanks for your post kara, it's good to know that Matise did fine when he got his vaccines...It calms my nerves a bit. I cancelled the appt for Sunday, because I want to be there with him the next day just in case he does have a reaction and I work Mondays...I'll try to make an appt for this weekend. I think we're just going to do the rabies for now though.
