| Raw meat diet I have 2 yorkies...Minnie Mouse will be a year old the end of this month and Abigail is 10 1/2 months. Anyway, I started feeding them boiled chicken and rice, boiled hamburger and rice. Their doctor told me they weren't getting all the nutrients they needed and I should get the back on dog food. Just adding the people food as a bit of an enticement. Well, I have personally paid for new wings to dog food manufacturers...NO WAY WILL THE EAT ANY OF THE DOG FOOD... HELP!!! What about a raw diet??? What exactly is that and would it be good for the girls...Thanks bunches for any and all advice...pam |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I've been feeding raw for about 10 years now and totally love it. I've used Primal, Natures Variety, Artisan, Stellas and more. Right now I'm using Sojo's - and really LOVE it! You just add your own meat and water - the rest is nutritionally balanced. Your vet is 100% -- what you're currently giving is NOT balanced at all - and you need to rectify that quickly - especially bc your kiddos are so young and still developing. There is also prey-model raw diet as well.

| Also, there are cooked food diets that you can prepare at home. However, you need to add supplements that are prepared by professional veterinary nutritionists and use recipes that are also professionally created. Once such company, operated through the University of California at Davis Veterinary College, is BalanceIt (https://secure.balanceit.com/).

The vet decided she needed a dental and I needed a good lecture. When we returned for the dental, I brought with me samples of **all** the foods we had tried out in vain. He picked one bag--based on ingredients and kibble size (relative to her teeth) and told me to put only that food in her dish. His comment was, "When she gets hungry, she will eat it." That's what happened. She eventually got a little chicken on the side every so often. I just read the comments by others above about about supplemented raw diets. Sounds like a better alternative to my "chicken on the side." --- KatysMom | |

| It's very much a myth that any food helps with teeth. It really all goes to genetics. You can help by brushing the teeth and getting dentals.

| Raw meat issues? First time posting, first time Yorkie parent. Pippa was on a raw meat diet until she developed hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Vomiting and pooping blood to the point that I thought she was a goner. Now she is on baked chicken breasts, raw veggie and kibble with a probiotic supplement. No problems since and I have started giving her the tiniest of slivers of raw beef maybe twice a week and still no problems. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Thank you for your replies. |

I'm a raw feeder, and I think that philosophy does not hold water. Perhaps the enzymes help a teensy tiny bit -- but it's not provable, most certainly not reliable in any way, and I would not consider it a 'benefit' in feeding raw food. With my 3 yorkies (all fed raw from a young age) -- dental issues are purely genetic and structural - just like in humans. No different. Things I would recommend for dental concerns: brushing teeth, and adding Healthy Mouth to your daily regimen for your kiddos (VOHC approved product, btw).
