| Kidney failing, need advice on product Hello dear friends, My 14 year old Yorkie, Gabey, is now suffering from kidney problems. Previously last year, we discovered that he may have liver cancer as well, though we chose not to perform a biopsy to find out. His liver enzymes were above normal. What concerns me most is the kidneys. On the PetWellbeing online site, there's a product called Gold Dog Kidney Support which sells for forty bucks. The testimonials from around the globe speak highly of this product as not only restoring the dog's appetite but improving his kidney blood levels. Dogs under this supplement do very well. Have you had any experience with this product? Please let me know. best, Matt |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I'm so sorry your kiddo is going thru these tough health problems . First and most importantly, are you actually seeing a Vet Internist for these issues - they would be your *best* source of reliable information....? Here are the product ingredients: A Proprietary Blend of Rehmannia Root (Rehmannia Glutinosa), Cultivated Cordyceps Mycelium (Cordyceps Sinensis), Astragalus Root (Astragalus Membranaceus), Dong Quai Root (Angelica Sinesis). So, it's an herbal blend, basically. While herbs - especially "herbal tonics" certainly can have positive effects on humans and animals -- I'm not sure this is where you should be focusing at present, honestly. You mentioned he "may have liver cancer" -- liver cancer tends to be fatal relatively quickly -- so what's happening w/ liver values...do you know...? I think I'd be focusing there, personally. If I were you, I'd get my kiddo to an Internist to discuss liver/kidneys -- and I'd print out info regarding this product -- bring it to the appointment.

| evaluating product Thank you. I've followed your astute comments for some time. Yes, Gabey is under the care of Dr. Jean Pitcairn of Chase Farm Veterinary Hospital, as she specializes in Eastern medicine approaches. She resisted the use of online products as they are not that reliable from sample to sample plus she likes to deal with companies she has preferred over the years. I'm in good hands. I left Gabey in her care this morning and will get him later today. I did suggest she consider the product as the testimonials are global and strongly supportive. So, we'll see. As for the liver, he had a mass about 4x5 cm in Sept '17. Now, that mass is 7 cm or so. His liver enzyme values Sept 17 were: AST 113; ALT 382; Alk Phosphatase 1227; GGTP 30. All those levels were relatively high; I haven't seen current levels yet. Why I'm more concerned with Kidneys over the liver is the liver can restore itself with proper care and medication. Kidneys seem to go quickly, but after reading all the reports on this forum for kidney problems, some dogs lasting up to 5 years after diagnosis. I do have both Royal Canine canned foods for kidney and liver support. And Gabey does eat it. Another more recent problem is that he has hurt his neck, so that is painful and being worked on by his doctor. More will be known later today. thank you, Matt |

| The problem with herbal medicines is that ones that might be good, or at least harmless, for one condition, might be bad for another condition. I would go with what your vet says, not online testimonials. I noticed that Chase Farm Veterinary Hospital has specialists in oncology, internal medicine, etc., so hopefully your regular vet is working in consultation with the other specialists. The liver enzyme levels from September, especially the Alkaline Phosphatase, are through the roof. If the current levels are not improved, you definitely need to consider what is going on with the liver. If a liver is diseased, it does not simply get better unless the underlying cause is cured. Keep us posted on your results!

| Gabey gone to heaven My wife and I had to let Gabey go yesterday morning. It was the most difficult event in my life. He was an absolute independent little boy, a real charmer and feisty. God bless all of you for your thoughts. I'm coming apart as I write this. thank you, matt |

| Gabey Thank you all, Gabey suffered from a fused neck disc which was painful and with all the other complications, he wouldn't eat, 5 days without food, struggling to walk, but still trying to keep up with his routines. Such a little independent guy til the end. The vet and we knew we had done everything to keep him going and it wasn't fair to him. It was the most difficult decision to make. Never an advocate of mercy killings, which this was, we fought the Christian moral conflict. For 14 years he trusted us and we put him to sleep knowing that he trusted our decision. God, what pain. | Gabey gone to heaven thank you all for your generous, kind sentiments. Struggle as we can with his absence, we have another dog, Meadow, a big 3 year old sheepadoodle, who is helping us with our profound grief. God bless. Matt |

| A question to you all Hello, especially Wylie's Mom: My little boy was brought home in a beautifully crafted wooden box with a small brass lock and key. He was placed on our mantlepiece along with his picture and first toy, a 8 inch Bernese Mountain dog snugged down inside a brown bomber jacket which he loved. First intending to bury him in the yard under a commemorative plant/shrub, we have decided to keep him on the mantlepiece. A long discussion I found by Wylie's Mom back, I think, 2011, wherein she discusses the loss of one's Yorkie and what to do, had me taking Gabey's collar name tag and adding to my own car key chain, so he's be with me always in that manner. He loved to sit on my lap while I drove, looking out the window, barking at fellow travelers remarking on his gorgeous face. So the question, which I also sent to YorkieTalk administration, is how do I screen print the wonderful comments you all have sent me? I do have your individual thoughts sent to my email but they are unattractive for one and for another, they aren't linked in a thread, one after another. I want to print those out and add them to a memorial folder/book of his records and photos. Has anyone attempted to print the threads of comments ? I'd be forever grateful. thank you, Matt p.s. Oh, I never told you: Gabey had a long tail; it was never cropped. All say that was unique as the standard, for me inhumane, practice is to crop their tails at birth. Long tails provide such expression and should never be eliminated. |
