Yorkie Yakker | To pluck or not to pluck? My 11 month old puppy seems to have a lot of hair in her ears! What is the consensus on removal? Trimming or gently plucking? My groomer will not pluck but I have had my vet do it for my other little guys in the past. She does not have ear infection but has been shaking her head a lot and I am wondering if the hair is the issue?

| Gently pluck the hair out to avoid possible ear infection. There are no consensus as long as you "gently" pluck.

| No I don't, I just pluck the hair out, I don't wait for a build up of hair.

| I pluck. The hair can hold moisture and cause infections. My vet says to pluck also.

| Mine hate getting theirs plucked....so I just trim it. As long as it's not acting like a wick to draw in moisture (from baths) & the ear stays relatively dry, it should be fine. If you pup is getting infections from abundance of ear hair, then it should be plucked out. Only the hair coming out from the ear canal itself should be easily pluckable. They come out fairly easily when plucked w/your fingers, no tools needed. The fine hairs around it actually stings when plucked, so those should be shaved or trimmed off. Be very careful w/ ear powders, it can cause clogs inside the ear canal. Needs to be cleaned out very thoroughly. Lastly, if it's recurring yeast infections (brown smelly gunk) & the pup is scratching @ it constantly, the cause is primarily from their high starchy diet. Eliminate the carbs & they will be itch & yeast free.

I always clean their ears after their bath. It seems like doing it b4 is futile. If some water got inside, they shake & it seems best to clean it after. Ear wax & stuff.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I have never plucked any of my yorkies ears and never have had issues as a result.

| With my past Maltese, I had always plucked. She had ears that flopped down, which held in moisture. I always used a powder to help with the grip when plucking it myself. With my two Yorkies, I have never plucked. They have very perky ears that stand up and I feel with the airflow, they should be okay to not get infections. I always make sure to dry their ears well after I bathe them. They've never gotten ear infections before. I only trip the hair down when I groom them.
