| Nervous yorkie We recently sold our gas motor home and purchased a diesel motor home. Along with it being diesel it has airbreaks that when released makes a lot of noise. Once she get startled by the noise she won't come down. Can someone recommend something that I can give her to calm her down while we are on the road traveling? She is fine when we get set up in a park she very upset while we are moving. |

| I haven't had any luck with calming aids I personally think it would be better to get something from the vet.

| Jackson is the SAME way... I love Trazodone for Jackson. I only give it when he REALLY needs it. Xanax did *nothing* for him. The vet prescribed it for us. My dad has an RV. He never had a huge issue with it when we would do short trips (2-3 hours). But when we drove to FL from MD, he never relaxed. He panted, paced, shook, wouldn't settle nearly the entire drive. It was stressful for all of us. I tried Rescue Remedy, calming treats/sprays, Thundershirt, etc, nothing worked. He is a food hound too (like he will do ANYTHING for food) and he wouldn't even take cheese or chicken to try to desensitize him to it. It was definitely the loud noises that freaked him out. Once we stopped moving, all was 100% fine. When we got to FL where we were staying for over a week... I called my vet and she called a prescription for Xanax. It didn't help him at all. Once we got home, spoke with the vet about it, we use Trazodone now with great results. It doesn't knock him out or make him out of it at all, it just eases his anxiety and he's able to go lay down. We hardly ever have to use it but I always keep a few pills on hand just in case of a stressful event coming up (fireworks, etc, do it too). I'd rather see him calm & relaxed on some medicine than panicking for so long. It's funny because in 90% of his life, he's a wonderful "bombproof" dog -- he's good on family vacations, he loves exploring new places/towns/etc, meeting new dogs and people, etc etc. What I like about it is that it doesn't just sedate him. It actually takes his anxiety away where he's able to go lay down and relax. I can almost see the weight come off his shoulders.

It took us a while to find a combination of routine and access to needs fulfillment to help our yorkie understand travel in motorhome was an adventure. She was frantic if we tried to use a seatbelt. So, our standard now is that she is on a leash that allows her access to food, water and a piddle pad. She helps us pack the MH for the trip and each time is filled with excitement and a treat. When we leave, the leash is hooked over the connection of a seatbelt so she can't bolt but has her access. When we are headed down the road we play the same song everytime, "On the Road Again" and she settles right down. She will sit in my lap, wander on her leash for a drink, food or potty. The only time she will seem nervous is when we have a pit stop for gas and for the first few minutes when we are in and out doing set-up. But it's mostly because she wants to explore. We use a vet Rx for flying, a much more difficult time. But we find she's actually learning that routine, too. The key to the effectiveness of the sedative (acepromazine) is to give the smallest possible dose about 30 minutes before desire effect is needed, give with a small amount of food and water, and provide your pet a safe place to be while sedated, and don't repeat doses too soon or for any other purpose. Just like all sedatives there are risks. So, do see your vet, but if you haven't already establish a routine. I was surprised how much that helped. | |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It's sooo important to try to keep your kiddo at least a little calm during trips bc it's safer for them. So, I wouldn't hesitate to try a medication if needed: valium, xanax, trazadone, Ace et...

| Our yorkie girl has a pillow and blanket just for rides goes between vehicles it's her blankie and teddy bear so to say like a child. Without them she shakes for miles before calming down. |
