| chicken meal vs chicken Hi all... I have noticed that a lot of dog foods are being made with the first ingredient being chicken/fish/lamb meal instead of just the meat. Has anyone else noticed this and if so do you find this change to be a reduction in the quality of the food. Thanks Tina

If what this article says is true, there's not really any significant difference as far as quality. I'll try to find some other articles that confirm this. | |

| Here is an article from Canidae that confirms what I wrote above. Actually, meat meal is considered to be a more desirable ingredient because the nutrients are more concentrated than those in meat alone. Meat VS Meal | Canidae The wikipedia article on chicken meal also confirms that nutrients are more concentrated in chicken meal as opposed to chicken: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_meal An article from the Dog Food Project notes that meat meals are more concentrated than meats, and that they can be a good ingredient in kibble provided the quality is high: The Dog Food Project - Meat vs. Meal So to answer the OP's question, a dog food containing meat meal could potentially be better quality and have more nutrients than dog food containing meat alone. |

| Since ingredients are listed by weight the meal form is preferable since the moisture has already been extracted the food has more actual meat content. If you have ever made beef jerky you know a large amount of meat becomes very little once dehydrated. |
