| Teeth brushing I thought this might be helpful to share. We were going over dental stuff in my vet assistant classes. It only takes 48 hours for the tarter on the teeth to turn into calculus which then can generally only be removed by a vet. So if your brushing teeth it's best to do it every day or every other day or it's really not helping. It was a shock to me because I was only brushing weekly .

| I actually had heard this before -- when I took Jackson years ago to the veterinary dentist I recall her telling me this. Crazy stuff. It's why Jackson needs another dental because I am such a slacker and hardly brush anymore. All the sudden his teeth got so much tarter. Amazing how fast it can happen to these little guys. Thanks for sharing -- such good info to know! So many people look at you like you're crazy when you say you brush your dogs teeth. But it can lead to so many other issues.

I don't get it! Is is just a toy-dog thing with the tartar and why doesn't her dog, Tavi, ever have any? My Tibbe, only slightly younger than Tavi, weighing 7.2 lbs., has had a yearly dental since I got him 9 years ago just two months after Billie got her terrier mix and I brush his teeth now at least 3 x weekly, his diet is mostly dry, prescription kibble, occasionally wet or microwaved and cooled. I need to go back to daily tooth brushing which I did for years but even then and still he has plaque and tartar by 11 months from his last dental cleaning under anesthesia, no matter the daily brushing I did for so long. After each professional cleaning, Tibbe's teeth are clean and white and he's never had a cavity, abscess or lost any teeth except for those taken at his first cleaning, when his little teeth were a brown cast and he had many retained baby teeth and 2 or 3 very bad teeth already at only 9 mos of age - 3 weeks after I first got him. Could you ask your teacher why the difference in these two terriers?

| I've been feeding Fabian a bit of toothpaste gel on my finger since the day I brought him home from the breeder (just before Easter at 13 weeks). I also ran my finger around his mouth at other times of the day just to get him used to the feel of me poking around in his mouth (not fun for me since he's teething!) We just transitioned to the rubber finger toothbrush about a week and a half ago and use it every day. The bristles are so rubbery that I really can't tell if it's doing anything productive, but his breath smells great! We hope to move to the three-sided toothbrush once he has his bog boy teeth. He gnaws on bully sticks incessantly to cope with teething and it seems to be keeping his teeth clean as a bonus. |

| I think the only VOHC approved toothenpast is Petsmile. We use it and Cali loves it. I brush about 4 times a week then let her lick the toothpaste the other days. Like I said, she loves it. We used to use CET but she seem to like the taste of the Petsmile better and the board certified doggie dentist, of course, wanted her to use the VOHC toothpaste.
