| Smelly dog I don't know why, but my Michi always smells so bad. I keep a clean home and he is an inside dog. I bathe him once a week (per vets instructions) with prescription shampoo for dry skin. But always about 3 days later he stinks!! I thought it could be his food, so I have changed it a few times but the smell keeps coming back. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | What is the actual shampoo you're trying? If he is truly *this* horrible smelling, then there is something going on like systemic yeast or seborrhea. Was a skin scraping done? If not, ask vet to do one asap (it's cheap, easy, and diagnostic for bacteria issues; then also grow out in culture to Dx any yeast).

I'm using ketoseb +ps shampoo. Thats what the vet gave me and said it would help with his smell and his constant scratching. It seemed to work in the beginning but then again he was taking apoquel also, which helped his excessive itching for a week or so, but not so much anymore.

| Has the vet checked her teeth? Stomach issues can also cause a smell.

| Dog smells Hi, I read your post on your baby boy. Could it possibly be leaking anal glands, a middle ear infection, crystals in his urine which will cause his urine to have a strong order. An infected glandular cysts? Check his body well for it If it gets on his coat it can smell. Or could it be something simple like he is rolling in feces. Some dogs will do this with bird or other animals feces? Is there something in your home that is leaking? Or do you have cats with a litter box. Just trying to help. Kind regards, Victoria |

I don't think it's any of those things. He goes to the groomer every few months so his anal glands get cleaned (and sure enough he smells a few days later). And when I took him to the vet they checked his ears. I don't see any cysts. He doesn't roll in and feces...he's strictly an indoor dog, and our only fur baby. The only thing I could think of is he constantly rolls and rubs himself on the carpet..which is pretty old. But even tho its old I have it steam cleaned every 4-6 months. Another thing I am noticing more of lately is he always has gooey stuff in the corners of his eyes...not sure if the 2 issues are related.

If on Apoquel, then he has allergies...? If he has allergies, then infections can be a life-long issue (ear, skin, eyes) - so you have to stay on top of all of those. If the eye gunk is yellow/green - then a vet needs to see this ASAP. If the Apoquel is not working then, once again, talk to the vet - bc you can probably increase the dose and/or give it 2x a day. Allergies are just *miserable* for dogs - so please treat this for your poor kiddo. More about allergies here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

| No, a skin scraping wasn't done. I will request one now that I know about it. It was never suggested by either of the 2 vets that I have taken him to, so I had no clue. The gooey eyes are not yellow or green, just white-ish. |

Anytime a dog is smelling this bad and/or has skin issues...a skin scraping should be done immediately, as well as a scraping grown out in culture for 10-14 days to assess any presence of fungus/yeast/etcetera. Let us know how it goes!
