| Free Feeding The breeder who I purchased my little girl from (she's 17 weeks today) told me I would always have to free-feed her as she's so small (2.5 lbs) and could end up hypoglycemic - which makes crate training pretty much impossible as she needs access to food & water 24/7. Does anyone have any experience and/or advice? Greatly appreciated |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Size doesn't ever dictate hypoglycemia, it just doesn't work like that, physiologically. Either she is vulnerable to it, or not. A 10 pound yorkie could have hypogly, while a 3 pound yorkie may not. Have you seen signs of it?

| So then it would still hold that if an adult is having hypoglycemia that no matter the size it's not good and means something is wrong?

| My dog is 8 years old, about 3.5 pounds, and eats two or three times a day on a set schedule. No problems. I need to be in control,of her elimination schedule since she goes to work with me, somfeeing on a schedule works best. She has never been hypoglycemic however. When she was at service dog school is when they taught us to use a schedule.

| No, no signs at all but that is what the breeder told me. I've only had her home with us for just over a week. |

| I would prefer to have her on a schedule (much easier to house train) but am afraid to try because of what the breeder said. I think I'll discuss with my vet and get her opinion I guess. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yeah...unless you're seeing signs of it btwn meals, then I doubt you'll suddenly see it. None of my yorkies had it at all.

| I have always been a fan of free feeding with puppies but I do not have it available at bedtime. Water in my opinion should only be taken away at bedtime not any other times. I have never had potty training issues.
