| Potato for dogs? Hi. My dog has been doing very well on the Hills ID Low Fat kibble for months and now and again I would give him a very small amount of mashed potato and veggies, with no issues. Well yesterday at evening dinner, my hubby gave him some of the same and I asked he mashed the veggies up well. He said he did!!! This morning, early, I see that my dog threw up a small amount of bile and some small pieces of potato. Has anyone else found that small lumps of veggies can not be digested? Thank you. By the way I did not notice this before I fed him his kibble and he ate it and is fine now. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It's not abnormal for dogs to not be able to digest (fully) veg, fruits, or even some complex carbs - and you'll see that in the digestion (from one end or the other). It's not a big deal or anything...it's just way a dog's GI system is - it's very short as compared to ours. And the enzyme release is somewhat different too, and that changes things.

| Potato Thank you for your kind reply. Comforting to know why this happened. I guess the undigested piece was just too big to get out into the intestines and so the stomach just sent it back! He was fine afterwards and has been since. Usually i can give him a very small amount of cooked mashed potato and/or veggies and that goes down ok. I also think the extra roughage helps with poops sometimes. I would not risk uncooked veggies, although others here find they are ok. I know cooked carrots go right through him undigested. Perhaps this should have been in the Rant thread as I was really upset that hubby gave the dog big pieces when I really stressed he mash them up up small. Men!!!!!! LOL! Thanks again for taking the time to reply. |
