| Ehrchiliosis My Pixie is a very curious girl. In the past, she has had stomach problems after swallowing things, including a match! We have been more careful with her toys, things on the floor or on tables where she can reach. However, she kept having stomach issues. After several vomiting, diarrhea, and bleeding episodes, the stomach medications didn’t seem to work. The vet wanted another blood test (previews ones were always normal). When he tried to draw blood, he noticed a coagulation problem. He ordered a coagulation profile, a desert profile, and several labs. The blood tests show that Pixie has Ehrlichiosis, a tick-transmitted disease. It was a shock to us because Pixie is usually inside our house. At one time, we tried to walk with her outside, but she was so nervous that we didn’t insist. We only take her to the doctor and the grooming and we always use a pet carrier. Anyway, at some point a tick bit her and we need to protect her from ticks or any other bugs that could affect her. The problem is that the doctor ordered Advantix and I am very worried about its toxicity. I don’t want Pixie to have abad reaction. Pixie started an antibiotic already but I am afraid to use the Advantix. I only found one post about Ehrlichiosis. Anyone out there with experience on this? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | At the shelter where I volunteer, we have had several dogs who have tick fever and the prognosis is often very good after treating w/ a round of Doxycycline. What about searching some more natural preventives like neem oil, neem sprays etc...?

| Wishing Pixie a speedy recovery. Ticks are a risk even if a dog never goes outside. Humans often carry the ticks into the house and they end up on the dog. I have had a couple instances of when I've been working in the yard, I come in, lean over to pet the dogs, and I see the tick drop off of me onto one of my pups. I try to check my boys closely every day that we go out, combing their hair and just massaging their body. I usually find the ticks through massage or when I see the doggies biting at themselves. It is scary though that ticks spread their diseases within 24 hours or less.

Thanks for taking time to reply. I haven't been able to use the Advantix. Pixie has been feeling so sick that the doctor told me to hold that prescription for now. Pixie started vomiting on Monday. Yesterday ate during the day but has been sick since last night. Today the vet gave her some stomach medications and shots. Next week we will see an internal medicine vet. We got Pixie to be a companion for my little girl that has a chronic stomach condition and Pixie has been sick sooo many times Please keep my sweet Pixie in your prayers.

| Praying for your sweet Pixie. One of my friends has a small Yorkie who had a tick-borne disease. I do not recall which disease it was, but I know she was on antibiotics for a month and was lethargic the entire time. Long recuperation, but she came out of it okay.

Thanks for your good wishes. It is going to be a very long month because Pixie hates the antibiotic and it is twice per day. I have to keep inventing new tricks! However, I already see her better. She took stomach pills during a week so I don't know if the vomiting and bleeding stopped for those pills. We will see.

Thanks for asking about Pixie. We don't know what is going on with Pixie. This week I took her to an internal medicine doctor. She recommended to stop the antibiotic for the tick disease until we do another lab to check a convalescent titer since could it could be exposure and not clinical disease at this time. Last night Pixie started having stomach issues after just 1 week of ending her stomach medications. The doctor sent me a list of labs so we can start to rule our diseases/conditions. She said it might be Addison's disease, an inflammatory disease or another intestinal issue. We don't have pet insurance so we need to start looking for one ASAP. Please keep Pixie in your prayers. She hasn't eat since yesterday.

| I am very sorry to hear Pixie isn't eating and that the doctor hasn't been able to pinpoint the problem yet. She is in my prayers. I understand how frustrating it is searching for a definitive diagnosis, and worrying about the expense of long-term care like this. I pray you can find insurance to help. Also look into Care Credit. Usually the interest free repayment program only applies to purchases of $200 or more, but it might help if you have an office visit with expensive testing. Please keep us updated on your little girl.
