| Need advice on Gabey's traecheal collapse medication. Hello, My 12.5 year old Yorkie, in good health, has had coughing spells for almost a year and a half. It was diagnosed as traecheal collapse, not severe at all. He coughs about 2-4 times a day, never at night and sometimes not at all. He was given a cough suppressant, Torbutrol 1mg, with instructions to give one pill once or twice a day, as needed. This is a narcotic, though 1mg is a low dosage. The pill should sedate him and it does. So my question: My vet no longer sells the same pills he prescribed last year; instead, he notified Roadrunner Pharmacy in Phoenix with a prescription for Gabey. The charge is 60 pills, 1 mg, for $92. Has anyone experience, good or bad, with this online pharmacy (roadrunner.com)? Is the cost about right? Also, what medications do any of you use for your Yorkie, with traecheal collapse? I don't plan on any surgery with stents, etc and will manage his condition medically. He's large for a Yorkie, 15 1bs. What is your experience with this TC? thanks a lot, Matt Tudor |

| Yes I've spent a lot on that medication too and it didn't work that great for my dog. The injectable that they give at the vet is much more potent than the pills. I had my dog on higher doses...he was 9 lbs and took about triple the dose of your dog. My dog was kept alive on hycodan and it was much cheaper and more effective for him. However I had all the drugs on hand for him, and ended up with a generic compounded version of torb from diamondback drugs in Phoenix. You could call them and price compare. I found that acepromazine plus hycodan knocked Barney out. He had a very severe condition and he died of it a few weeks ago at 16. He wasn't bad until 14.5 and that's when he started to use medication although he was diagnosed at age 2. good luck!

| thanks to 107barney Quote:
I have looked up on BBB the rating for the pharmacy roadrunner. BBB gave it an F for multiple complaints and non responsiveness to complaints. Further, I read reviews of their employees of their company: again mixed but mostly poor. so, I won't be dealing with them. I'll look up Diamondback you suggested. I'll check out further the hycodan syrup. I'll let you know. so far, though, Gabey has not been coughing in the last two days. Maybe it's the pill which does calm him. But i have to find something cheaper. thanks, matt Tudor

| to 107barney: I'm going to the vet and check out medication that Diamondback pharmacy recommended: Butorphanol 1 mg. Suspension. I asked what suspension meant: it means it's a liquid not a pill/capsule. I'll let you know. Will also ask about Hycodan (?). thanks, Matt |

| Barney used Hycodan pills. The butorphanol he took was 2.5mg pills that Diamondback compounded for him. They may not be able to compound to a pill for 1mg- not sure. By the way, I've been using diamondback for the past 6 years and they've been reliable and consistent. Recently I started to use Stokes pharmacy in NJ for a compounded eye drop for Teddy and they've been easy to deal with too. You might want to check with them - I think I found diamondback to be cheaper on the butorphanol.

So are they only sending you 4 ml? If you are dosing 1 ml, that will only give you four doses? Or is that all you need?

| I have used Roadrunner for many years and never had an issue. My vet usually calls them though, so I cannot comment on customer service.

| I have had quite a few pups with CT over the years. Each one has been different. What works for one often does not work for another. I have used Temeril P, hycodan syrup, theophylline (not a fan), ace promazine, prednisone, torbutrol, lomotil and maybe a couple of others might be escaping me at the moment. It is often trial and error to find out what works for a pup.

| I think that the dosages in liquid form, being delivered this week from Diamondback, are 4 ml each, then, I guess I'm to give Gabey one quarter of that each day, or 1 mg. They are sending me enough for one month, with shipping total cost $41 or so. Then I asked do I call up for a refill at the end of the month..yes, do that. Each month, I asked? They said get the vet to prescribe for 3 or 4 months as they won't do more as it's a prescribed substance. So I guess I call up every 3 or 4 months for a new prescription. I'm just eager to see if it works the same as the Torbutrol. The vet said the new drug IS the same..not to worry. So we'll see. As of this morning, Saturday, he hasn't coughed in days.... thanks, Matt |

I'm going to talk with someone at Yorkietalk about navigating the site, very confusing and when I do log on the next day, searching for my posts the day before, I'm directed to posts I made last year, 2015. So I need to find out more. thanks, Matt Oh, what i said briefly was that, in researching Roadrunner before ordering, I found the many complaints had to do with service more than product. Service meaning: not responding to inquiries, not sending the right order or the wrong amount, charging more than originally anticipated for product, not calling back, etc. Also, looking at reviews of the employees of the company, their rating was most poor: firing someone who took a scheduled day off, firing someone who complained too much, too much disorganization within company, the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing...complications abound within the company....so I was not going to deal with them. I told my vet about roadrunner (they had recommended them), showed them the printout of complaints, the BBB rating and she said that they don't have but a few customers who need compounding, so no research went into the recommendation. Now they are informed. That's about it. Thanks for responding. Matt
