| Baby food for my Yorkie? After my dog threw up shortly after taking antibiotics for some ongoing belly issues, the vet tech suggested trying baby food (chicken or beef). I tried the plain chicken and rice and he isn't too interested in it. Anyone try baby food? Any suggestions or brands? Things to steer clear of? |

| I have seen chicken baby food suggested for pups with sensitive tummies. No brand was ever suggested.

One of my boys doesn't like rice, but steamed plain chicken is usually hard to resist. How long has he not had an appetite? The main things to watch for are dehydration and low blood sugar. If he doesn't have problems with these, going 24 hours with food isn't too bad. If you still want to try baby food, avoid anything with onion powder, excessive salt, and of course, any food that is toxic to dogs.

| Thanks for the replies. I'm going to pick up some baby food tomorrow morning to see how that goes. He ate some of the chicken after he went up to the bowl 3x and saw what it was. The rice on the other hand, he did not. I took my little one to the vet nearly two weeks ago for a fever. No eat, drinking or pooping at the time. They gave him some hydration and he was good to go within 2 days. Less than a week later, he started acting funny. Didn't want to eat much or drink much, not interested in toys. He then started hiding in strange places and sleeping there too. I thought it wa his teeth. I brought him back to the vet today and they don't suspect the teeth but rather severe belly pain. X-ray and complete blood work came back fine, nothing worrisome. They gave him an injection of bupresione(?) with hydration and anti nausea meds. They sent me home with antibiotics,Pepcid and some tramadol. He hasn't had much to drink since the vet visit and hasn't been peeing much either. I suspect he was quite dehydrated from not drinking much. The prior day. He vomited 4 hours after the first dose of the antibiotics, but ate some chicken and rice thereafter. I gave him the second dose and some tramadol about 4 hours ago and so far so good. He starts shaking whenever I approach him and refuses to sleep in his normal space. He almost seems spooked. He darted toward his dog bowl as if I were going to take it away earlier which we never do. Just really really concerned something else is going on that they're missing. I don't like seeing my little buddy like this. He seems so so sad and I'm s little hesitant about all this medication. |

| Regular human boiled chicken and rice might be better that's what my vet normally suggests that when we are having tummy issues. If you get baby food make sure there is no onion or garlic.

| He seems to really like the boiled chicken. The rice not so much. I'm a little iffy on the rice considering it's going to constipated him with the pain meds and everything. He refuses to drink. We're on nearly 24 hours of no water. He had a bowl at the vet and he got lots of subQ fluids there. He just went pee for the first time in many hours. I just gave him chicken mixed with some of his kibble and he gobbled it down. He seems spooked of the kitchen. Refuses to really spend time here although it used to be his fav space. Giving him his meds is quite the challenge. I feel like he hates me for forcing it in him. He's been gravitating to my mom. I worry he is still uncomfortable...he's been stretching s bit. I've read about the prayer position and not sure if he's done it. Any suggestions on accessing pain and giving him meds? He finds pills hidden in food, doesn't like greenies and is real particular. |

| To get him to drink water, buy some chicken legs and thighs or a whole chicken I only got the parts, boil them. no salt, season added, you CAN add fresh carrots for a bit more flavor. After it's cooked let it cool down to the point where the fat settles to the top, skim off as much as that fat as you can, add just a teaspoon to his water to give it the chic flavor, be careful, not too much chic broth he is libel to drink entire bowl of water and may throw it up, if he refuses the water add another teaspoon of chic broth. This little tip was SHARED with me from one of our great long time members after my boy had major surgery and refused water, boy did he ever drink lol. Hope this helps you as it did me. Giving pills, have you tried the Pill Pockets made by Greenie. The pill pocket taste like a treat, you put the pill in the pocket and the pups gobble it up. I have use pill pockets since they came on the market.

| I'll have to try this because it's been like 30 hours since he drank. I called the vet and she says that it's because he isn't thirsty. She says he got lots of fluids and so that's why he isn't thirsty and he will drink when he is thirsty. Last week he got fluids and drank so much water despite the fluids so I'm not buying it. They close in an hour and I'm so worried that he's dehydrated or something will happen to him. |

I would hold carrots or anything other than the chicken and rice. Sounds like he could have pancreatitis. Did the vet do a cPL? That is usually the best way to diagnose pancreatitis. If it is pancreatitis, I'm not sure if the treatment would be any different than what you are doing now, except severe cases are often recommended hospitalization. Make sure you have a 24 hour emergency vet lined up just in case. How old is your baby?

| My doggie is 7. He's normally a good eater and keeps hydrated. Regular bowel movements. He does get the occasional kennel cough bout when I board him but otherwise healthy. I racked my brain to find chicken broth yesterday but couldn't find one without onions or garlic. I bought some organic baby food, let him lick a tiny bit and then just dipped a droplet in his water to give it some taste. Worked like a charm - he drank half the bowel. I actually had to remove it so he wouldn't drink the whole thing and upset his belly. Vet did all necessary bloodwork and took an X-ray to check for obstructions or masses. Everything came back good. She also did a reveal exam which she said seemed fine. He passed a very large stool after we got back from the vet on Monday late morning and hasn't gone since. I gave him some pumpkin purée but I've read that can make them gassy and vet mentioned he had lots of has in his belly. So hard to manage all the symptoms and side effects! |

| Make your own chicken broth, even if it's a couple of pieces of thighs , make chicken salad for yourself with the chicken, I myself do NOT give that chic to my dog, I feel the chic has to much fat in it, it's the broth that I want. I didn't look for canned broth so I don't know if it is sold plain.Left over broth can be poured into ice trays, freeze it, use a frozen cube in water when needed.

| When my Tommy was younger I went though the same things you are going though. Anytime my pups get sick I give them Gerbers chicken, turkey and beef. They love it. As for water I gave him children's clear Pedialyte, I give pills in cheese or lunch meat. I switch him to Stella & Chewy raw diet and we are major problem free. |
