| Opinions Wanted Hill's Precription P/D vs. Innova Puppy My vet prescribed Hill's Prescription P/D for my Zoe the day after I got her from the breeder at 7 weeks. She weighed .9 lb. I've been feeding dry kibble and some canned. Mostly dry. She's been doing great, very energetic & healthy. However, lately she seems to have lost interest in her food. I put it down and she looks up at me like, "that's it?". She eventually eats it. Today I mixed Innova and Hill's 50/50 and she is picking out the Innova, eating it and putting the Hill's on the floor beside her bowl, but it's new and probably more exciting at the moment. She is currently 2 lbs at 5 months. I've been reading a lot on YT about Innova and it sounds wonderful, so I bought a bag of Innova Puppy. Here are the nutritional statistics off each of the bags. Innova Puppy Crude Protein 26% Crude Fat 12% Crude Fiber 3.5% Moisture 10% Vitamin E 1000 IU/kg Vitamin C 500 mg/kg Linoleic Acids (Omega 6) 3.9% Fatty Acids (Omega 3) 1.3% Total Microorganisms 1,000,000,000 CFU/LB Calorie Content 500 kcal/cup Hill's Prescription P/D Crude Protein 28% Crude Fat 20% Crude Fiber 3.5% Moisture 10% Calcium 1.1% Phosphorus 0.9% DHA 0.1% Ingredient lists are too large to publish here. Hill's 1st 3 ingredients are Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal and Pork Fat. Innova's 1st 3 are Chicken, Chicken Meal, Barley. Okay, Nutrition experts, What is your opinion on which is best for my little Zoe? Your input is very much appreciated. |

| Ingredient lists are too large to publish here. Hill's 1st 3 ingredients are Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal and Pork Fat. Innova's 1st 3 are Chicken, Chicken Meal, Barley. Any time a grain is listed in the first five ingredients the food is not something I would feed. Chicken by-products include intestines (and their contents) heads and feet (which are probably good protein, but sounds gross), and any and all other parts of the chicken. Chicken Meal on the other hand is meat which has been cooked and dried and crushed into a powder. Some of you other food experts out there correct me if I am wrong, but meal can contain parts that you and I don't ordinarly eat, lungs, kidneys, hearts, and other organ meat, but it does not contain by-products. Remember, vets aren't usually nutritionists, just as human doctors aren't. Big dog food companies spend a lot of money romancing vets to get them to sell their products. I am sure your vet made the very best recommendation from the information at hand. Good luck! I feed Innova EVO to my three Yorkies and I doubt that I will change any time soon. |

| I would say the Innova is better overall. My vet put Chachi on the prescription PD but only for a short time so he would gain weight when he was tiny. He said the fat content is too high to leave them on it.Chachi didnt eat it very well either.

Well, I am not an expert, but I feed my Edie Hills Prescription T/D at the recommendation of my vet. It also has corn as a primary ingredient. Many people on this board will tell you corn is a big NO-NO. When I asked why on another thread a few weeks ago, some people said that it is because corn causes skin itchiness. Well, Edie has great skin and does not have itchy skin, so I guess corn is not a problem for her. Last time I was at the vet, I asked him about food and corn. He told me that Hills has some great nutrionists and he considers them to be in the forefront of pet nutrition. I asked about vitamins, since I give Edie Vitacaps every day with omega-3 fatty acids. He said it couldn't hurt, but it wasn't necessary since the food she is eating is balanced and meets 100% of her requirements. We use the T/D because toy dogs have special dental needs. Bacteria associated with tooth and gum disease can get into the bloodstream and cause serious problems with organs like the heart, liver, etc. In fact, I read somewhere (can't recall where at this point) that "proper dental health for dogs is THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do to preserve the health and prolong the life of your dog." That made a big impression on me. Edie loves the T/D diet by the way, and at 5.5 years old, her teeth are gorgeous. We have never had to have a professional cleaning either. I realize that some on this board might disagree, but I have an excellent vet, and we agree that for my little one, this is the right food. | |

| My vet also recommends the Hill's Food. But then they get samples for free, and I'm sure other perks. Kalena was on Science Diet from the breeder, but since doing research (mostly here), I have figured out, it's just not that great. I was going to switch to Royal Canin Puppy, but now I am wanting to get her on the Chicken Soup Puppy. So, what she gets is Science Diet Puppy 1/2, and 1/4 Royal Canin Puppy, and 1/4 Chicken Soup, which is about 2/3 cup total food. I am weaning her off the Scieince Diet, but I still may feed the Royal Canin and Chicken Soup together. The only thing I don't like about the Royal Canin is the corn, but Kalena likes it. She is eating so much better with this mixture, than when I had her on just Science Diet. She is starting to fill out, and not as skinny. She is 18 weeks old, and 2.5 pounds.
