Default Up date on Ruger

Well it's been one week & one day since Ruger was discharged from doggie hospital, with a case of pancreatictist. We are very careful what he's eating.
Yesterday he threw up, but seemed to be ok. Lots of engery, eating. Scared the willies out of me. Also, in the mornings he wants to eat wet grass when I take him out. I try my best to distract him, but he doesn't throw up after he has a bite or two. He goes Monday morning for more blood work. Does anyone have this problem with eating grass? My Vet told me eating grass was a concern. I've never known a dog or cat that didn't eat grass occasionally. Hum....
Please pray he gets a good report.

Sorry to hear Ruger threw up, but glad he is doing well with energy and eating.

Grass eating seems to be a Yorkie thing. I originally thought dogs only ate grass to try to throw up or to settle their stomachs, but I've read so many comments here about Yorkies pretending they are sheep and munching on the green stuff. My boys both grab blades of grass and weeds on their walks. In fact, a very, very long piece of dried grass came out of Teddy today.

If this is a new thing for Ruger, then it is more concerning.

You mentioned in your other thread that he was eating a couple cherries for treats at night. I would hold the cherries, if you aren't already. They can be irritants to the digestive track. Teddy had a very sensitive system when he was younger and could handle only a very limited set of fresh food treats. He still doesn't do well with fruits.

Oh did I say cherries. I meant Cheerios. I hope everyone doesn't think I feed him cherries.. Plain Cheerios none of the fancy ones.

Yes, the Vet gave him canned nasty pro plan very low fat. I mix it with his Nutri Source kibble or sometimes just for a treat.

Are you sure it is Pro Plan? You know, there is nothing wrong with prescription foods. Don't believe all the rankings on the web about food!!! I have pups on RX foods for various conditions and they are doing well. I encourage you to stick with RX foods for now if your vet is recommending it...it is not nasty food at all. Hill's ID and Royal Canin GI foods are both low fat. My pup who had pancreatitis is on Purina EN and he loves it.

As for the grass eating, I find that they tend to do it more when they have tummy upsets. He may still be feeling a bit out of sorts.

Hope his labs come out well!

Auto-correct on computers is a menace. I'm sure everyone else was thinking Cheerios.

Praying for good results on Ruger's follow up labwork.

Hi Ladyjane, Ruger is on Purina EN. That's what the Vet sent home. Right now I'm mixing it with his Nutri Source dry. I give the EN for snacks too. He does like it. He's doing good, but he wants to do most of his eating @ night, Hum...

Hi Schicks. Did your vet give the okay to start mixing his regular food in with the EN this soon? If not, I would consider sticking faithfully to the RX diet for now. Even though Ruger seems happy and playful, it can take a while for the inflammation in the pancreas to fully resolve and relapses at this point aren't all that uncommon. And I say that from the standpoint of having been there and done that. We all want our little buddies to get back to normal as quickly as possible, but especially considering that Ruger threw up yesterday and is wanting to nibble on grass, he may need the restricted diet for a bit longer. The best choice for him right now is a diet that is bland, low fat, easily digestible, and contains a lot of moisture. The EN fits all of those restrictions. You may be able to slowly transition him back to his regular diet over time, but I would not rush it. Repeating the Spec CPl will give you the information you need to know whether the pancreatitis has completely resolved.

Good luck, and here's hoping the labs come back perfect on Monday!

When Sammy was on a prescription diet my vet had me call the company to find out what I could add to the food without compromising the health of my dog or the benefit of the prescription food.

Ruger seems to be very hungry later in the evening. He has a lot of engery. Keeps me on my toes constantly Ha! I will post another up date after blood work tomorrow. I hope I will know right then.
How are your babies doing with their pancreatous?

Schick, just my two cents, but I'd specifically request the Spec CPl test. It's an IDEXX test that has to be sent out, but its usually an overnight turnaround, and your vet should have the results by the next morning. The sensitivity for pancreatitis is very high, so you will know exactly where Ruger's numbers are.

I lost my little Scooby about a year and a half ago (at 16+ so he had a nice long life) but he first got pancreatitis when he was about 11. After that, he was very sensitive to any fat in his diet and was on low fat for the rest of his life. He ate the Royal Canin GI low fat, or sometimes I home cooked for him, and sometimes that wasn't even enough because he'd get little flares now and again. I got really quick at recognizing and managing them, so he did well but it took a lot of vigilance.

A bit after we lost Scooby, I rescued the little rascal in my avatar from the county shelter. He was malnourished and underweight and his digestive system was a wreck, so I'm pretty sure that's why he was surrendered. My first thought was, "Oh no! Pancreatitis again!" but after a few months of food trials and tests it turns out he has IBD. I'm not sure which is easier to manage! But once we got his gut straightened out and had him on meds and food that agreed with him, he did a complete 180. He was about two and 11 pounds of skin and bones the day we picked him up, and a year later he tops the scales at 15 pounds and is NOT fat.

Hopefully the lab work will show a perfect pancreas for Ruger, but even if it does, take my advice and take it slow introducing his regular diet back. Some dogs end up with chronic pancreatitis and it is no fun for you or him.
