| Problem with Acana... what to do? Hey, everyone! I really need your help. My Yorkie is 3 years old and growing up she ate dry food with grain, like ProPlan and other two brands. She never did very well with these foods, because she was never interested on any of them (she would barely eat) and, at a certain point in her life, she started to itch and her skin was reacting to something. Tests were made and there was no fungus or any other skin disease or health problems, so this was when I thought I should get her the best food I could find without grain, because she could be allergic to them. I got her Acana Pacifica (mainly because of the salmon for the her skin, since her skin is very sensitive) and she's been eating it for 7 months now. It was amazing from the first day: she loves the food and eats it to the last kibble. There seems to be no reactions on her skin (but I believe that's also because I'm using a special shampoo recommended by the vet). But here's the problem now. Her stool was always fine with the foods that had grain. Now, with the Acana Pacifica, her stool is never solid. It's not runny, but it's not solid enough. Also, last week her anal glands smelled really bad after pooping. I had to wash her butt and the smell is gone. Didn't happen again, but I'm worried. I know I'm not overfeeding her. She weights around 4,9kg and I'm feeding her 60g once a day, for less active dogs, just like it says on the Acana label. I don't want to change the brand, because of her appetite and skin problem. But it's not ok for her to keep pooping soft stools. Unfortunately, Acana Pacifica is the only range that has salmon, the best fish for skin conditions. Could you please give me your opinion? I'm very lost here. |

| Maybe try a different protein...like Acana Grasslands. Some dogs do not do well w/(certain) fish. My Mimi's anal glands fill up when she eats fish based food, so I only give her a tiny piece of sardine once a week or about a week an a half, for the omega 3's. You can also try giving krill oil instead.

| Jackson gets softer poo w/ the fish formulas so we stick to chicken and duck. Acana duck and the new Acana Heritage is what we've been feeding w/ good luck. Also I am not sure of the specifics of the amount you are feeding but Jackson is 18lbs and gets 1/2 cup of Acana kibble per day mixed with wet food among other little treats throughout the day. I do not follow the bag at all or else he would be fat lol.

| Oh it may only be in the US! They have a new plant in Kentucky and the new Heritage formulas are being made there. I am unsure if they are available in other countries.

Just wanted to mention though, that it might not be a bad idea to rotate the flavours within the same brand. I buy the smaller 5lb bags because Scottie is so small and it takes a while to get through a bag. The larger bags also get stale faster and Scottie's appetite won't allow for stale meals . Anyway, every time before he's near the end of a bag, I switch the flavours and get another one (still Orijen), and mix them until the first bag is finished. My theory is, this way, he gets a variety of protein and hopefully won't end up being allergic to one or another. But obviously, if your dog doesn't do well on one protein, you should avoid it. If you're uncertain, you can buy the small sample bags to try out first. I think it's worth considering

| I decided to go with the Wild Prairie. Let's see how it works. She also loves the taste of this one, so that's a good start. I guess as long as it's Acana, she will always love it. She started eating Wild Prairie two days ago, so it's a bit soon to see the results. Thank you, guys! |
