| Zymox tooth gel bad for sensitive tummies! My Yorkie Jake has been battling SIBO/colitis for 5 months, pretty much since I rescued him. I posted a thread in the sick forum. My vet has him on Flagyl and since the science Diet ID wasn't fixing it, I put him on limited Natural Balance, but that also didn't work so I caved and put him on Royal Canin prescription canned food for gastro issues per my vet's suggestion. Everything seemed to get better and I even got him down to 1 quarter of Flagyl every other day. Then I stupidly used this Zymox tooth gel on his teeth and gums and the very next day, bam diarrhea! Then bloody poops. Then extra peeing in the house. :/ I totally blame myself, I feel terrible. He's back on the 2 Quarter Flagyl a day and it's been 4 days and he still has soft poops. No blood tho, but I still feel awful and like he will never get passed this. Next month he goes to get his shots updated and I'm going to ask for the Tylan powder. I'm so scared to keep him on Flagyl, this is his 4th bottle. Anyways, I just wanted to warn anyone who's baby has colitis or a sensitive tummy to not use the Zymox tooth gel. |

| He is doing better today. This morning I tried crushing the Royal Canin kibble and sprinkling it over the wet, and while he did have an accident when I was out, it looked more formed and no blood that I can see. But this is just one day. Yesterday he still had soft poops and blood jelly drops and he is on two dose of Flagyl and Royal Canin. I am just taking this one day at a time and doing a lot of praying. If he's still having blood by Saturday, I'm calling my vet, he works on Sat. I just worry about giving him all these antibiotics, it seems that every time he goes into a flare, it takes longer for the Flagyl to work. When he first got sick, they put him on Flagyl and it worked almost overnight! Now it takes weeks and I'm scared he's building a tolerance to it. Other than the loose poops and blood, he's also peeing more, having accidents in the house. I wonder if this is the Royal Canin or a Flagyl side effect because he was housebroken. Idk I bought a steam cleaner, but his pee really stains my beige carpet. I have gotten a lot more patient and less hung up on perfect carpet because of Jake, Lol, I don't care about the dang carpet, I just want my baby well. Anyway, you would never no he is sick, he loves to play and his hair and coat is beautiful, eyes are clear. He's precious, so I'm hopeful we will get through this. Thank you for asking Wylie's Mom. |

| My Wheaten Terrier had a hard time with Flagyl side effects. Have you considered a good course of probiotics to build his GI back up? I kept Lucy on a constant dose of probiotics and it made a big difference. Hang in there ... |

| Thanks for the support, what were the side effects if you don't mind my asking? I was using Fortiflora, but I have run out and I didn't feel it was helping that much, do you have any good probiotic suggestions? My Jakey is 8 pounds btw. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Just wondering...how old is Jake again...? Also, did he ever have giardia as a puppy or anything...? As for probiotics, I happen to love the ones from Natures Farmacy.

| We feel that Lucy had a compromised immune system caused by a storm of incidences (over-immunization, over breeding, exposure to pesticides, caught up in a few food recalls, etc) If we had too much wet weather she would get a bout of stomach issues- The vet would prescribe a short course of flagyl and ID food. The probiotics were a long term preventive, to keep her GI strong. I did change all her dishes to stainless (no crockery), rinsed her feet after walks (she was a terrible licker) No processed treats or chewing(rawhide, knots) items, etc. It was a slow process of finding out what set her off and keeping her on schedule. |

Thanks for the probiotic suggestion. He's on Fortiflora right now but he had a bad day today after I put the packet on his breakfast. He pooped 3 times in the house soft to medium poops, then after he had his dinner, he went out and had some diarrhea and a couple blood drops. I'm so completely confused as to what is going on, I really don't think the Royal Canin is agreeing with him. I can't keep giving him food that makes him sick, at least he had a little remission on the Science Diet ID. Tomorrow morning I'm going to give him SD for breakfast and call my vet. Something is still wrong here, he's not even wanting to play tonight, that is not a good sign. Please pray for my Jakey tonight. | |

| I totally understand the frustration and helplessness like he's never going to get over the upset stomach issues. I struggled with this too at first with Scottie. It was really stressful! How much time was there in between the changing of the Science Diet, Natural Balance, and then Royal Canine? Was this over a few days or a week or a few months? If his stomach has been irritated for the past 5 months, I would try not to change up his food again. Find a quality food, read the ingredients, make sure there's no cornmeal and that it's grain-free, and just stick to it. The best food ingredients say chicken or turkey or fish etc without the word "meal" (i.e. "fish meal" isn't as good as just "fish"). It took me a while to get a routine down with Scottie, granted he only had a sensitive stomach and no other diagnosed illnesses. Each time he had soft stool, I took away the kibble and he was on an oatmeal/boiled chicken/pumpkin mash diet. This is easier on his stomach than the hard-to-digest kibble. I'd feed this either a day or two (or longer if the bad/soft/diarrhea poop lasted). Note that when they eat this mash, there's much less poop because most of it is absorbed into their system. When his poop solidified again, I'd very slowly start feeding him small amounts of the kibble again. If the poop was still good, I fed a little more kibble with each day. I made the mistake of switching his kibble too many times initially. Mostly because he seemed to be disinterested in his food after a couple weeks. Then because of the switching, he got upset stomach. I learned from my own experience, to just stick with one kibble as long as his poop is good when he eats it - he'll eventually eat it when he's hungry even if he's being picky one day and refusing to eat. It might be worth trying for you, but freeze-dried meals are easier on their stomachs than kibble. For a while when Scottie had upset stomach, I had him on the chicken/pumpkin/oatmeal mash and introduced freeze-dried meals in prior to the kibble. I just wanted to make sure he was getting enough nutrients because that mash is not sustainable over long periods.

| Poor Jakey...I really hope he'll start feeling better. His stomach is probably in a lot of pain that's why he's not wanting to play... Make sure that he's drinking water so he doesn't get dehydrated. You can try giving him diluted salt-free chicken broth. But make sure to take away the kibble for now.

| Thank you Canana for your replies. I did switch in a day from Hills Id to Royal Canin because my vet said to, he said they are very close except that the Hills has a slightly higher fat content. I am back to the Hills ID, there is something in Royal Canin that does not agree with Jakey's system. My vet prescribed sulfasalazine 3x a day and we are staying with the 2 Flagyls a day too. For 2 weeks, if no improvement we go to the next step- see my thread in the sick forum if you want to read what that entails. I do believe in my gut (no pun intended) that it is allergy/stress colitis. I don't know what he's allergic too and I do want to find a higher quality food for him once he stabilizes. I can't change his food again right now. My vet agrees and thinks he may even end up on kangaroo food or something way out in left field like that, or rabbit, due to allergies. Thank you again for your concern and advice, I'm so glad I found this place. It makes me feel a lot better to have support during all this. |
