| Very big scare. I'm new to this forum, and you guys have been welcoming. Last night, after the cheese incident was probably the top 4 worst nights of my life, and that's saying something. I don't want to make that too long. Chewie is a TOUGH chewer. I have looked for other puppies on this forum who does what she does; she grinds down SO hard when she chews you can hear it from the other side of the room. I had one post I found, but it wasn't like this. She was chewing off the stuftie we call Lamb Chop's tongue. I did the responsible thing and was fast about it. Took it, threw it out, and while doing that, I gave her a nylabone. Nubbied one, since she's very obviously teething. I heard a loud CRACK. Dan said it's probably her grinding and I disagreed. I ran to her, and the piece was RIGHT there, and I could NOT fish it out. she was startled and she swallowed it. I'm STILL crying writing this. I took her to the ER vet, my husband was Upset for her, upset about what it could cost, just the whole gauntlet I went through. Chewie was fine, until I was so upset. We took that damn bone. Sorry for my french. The vet told us it was small enough to pass. He said we could get her looked at, but it wasn't something he'd say was a necessity. We called my vet this morning and will follow up when he's back tomorrow. I told my husband I really think we should get an ultrasound just to be on the safe side. Yes, I've read up on the symptoms, and I'm still not going to feel settled until it's looked at. She is eating. She is peeing, she is pooping. She is currently angry that we took any toys away she could remotely chew through, and was given a kong treat toy in the meantime, until we get the bully sticks. I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to put it in, I know I'm still highly upset and very disappointed in myself. She looks to ME to take care of her, and I failed her last night. Pet insurance is being looked into, and hopefully we find the right one, I know every person has their own standards looking into this. I just wrote on here to vent. Needed to just get my thoughts out. |

| You did the rite things in taking the toys away & in getting her checked out buy the vet rite away. Now you need to be dissecting her poops to see if you can find that piece of nylabone, to be sure it comes out of her. Keep an eye out for vomiting & diarrhea or bloody stools witch can mean either a blockage OR a tear somewhere in her digestive tract. IF she has any of the symptoms that I mentioned, get her back to the vet ASAP. FYI, they make puppy nylabones that are soft & rubbery BUT you have to closely monitor their time with those as they can chew off chunks of the rubbery ones & that can cause a blockage as well. |

| It is soooooooo very frustrating....you do everything you think you can do, to make sure they are getting safe things to play with, chew, eat, etc....and ya know, sometimes things just happen when all precautions have been taken. The only chew toys my dogs have are big rope things, those Kong toys, which are REAL heavy duty rubber, I have a wheel-tire looking thing that looks like a heavy duty rubber tire from a tricycle, I let them have large tennis balls, the larger dogs get a ball the size of a softball....(but remember one of Oprahs dogs choked to death on a tennis ball)....the only thing I give my dogs to chew up and eat are Milk Bones...good old 70 year old Milk Bones, like WE all ate when WE were kids!!!.....I get the largest ones they make for my babies so no one gets a small piece of milk bone in their throat...they chew off pieces and eat it......and if they manage to swallow an oversized piece, which has never happened because they break off in small chunks, it is a food substance not rubber or nylon or something like that, so it is digested! |

She was given a milk bone at daycare the other day, and instead of hiding it like the edible bones, she ate it. It's something my big dogs ate growing up, too. They are awesome. Oh, and my dad would give my oldest son those bones, like a little creep. I thought canned pumpkin was a good idea, and... it was. She passed it just a little while ago. Thank you for the suggestions and the words of encouragement. | |
