| A tip for fussy eaters My little ones have been enjoying their home-cooked diet for a number of months now---we use a recipe our vet gave us that includes all organic ingredients plus some supplements. Then, about a week ago, my little boy started needing a LOT of coaxing to eat. Fast forward a week and I was basically hand feeding him the whole meal in one sitting. Fast forward another week, and it was taking me two sessions of about half an hour each to hand feed him. And then his sister decided that hand feeding looked like it was a good thing....and I was late to a work meeting because I was lying on the floor hand feeding two Yorkies for much of the morning! At that point I called the vet in a panic, wondering if we should get them both tested and that maybe they were both ill. She asked me a lot of questions about their general health, and based on our discussion, said that it sounded like they were probably in good health and were just being picky. She suggested putting a few drops of coconut oil in their food. The smell apparently is very appealing to dogs and it is a good general supplement to their health. She did say that if that didn't work and/or the dogs were loosing weight, seemed low energy, or had any other behavioral changes (beyond wanting me to hand fed them) I should bring them in. Well, I tried the coconut oil and it worked like a total miracle! Both dogs put their little faces into the bowls and chowed down until their bowls were empty. Now both dogs are super energetic and joyful AND I don't have to spend the best part of a morning sitting/lying on the floor and begging them to eat. Has anyone else tried this little trick? I also used cheese with a previous Yorkie, but I know that cannot be a long term solution, whereas the coconut oil is something I can keep using apparently.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | A lot of us use coco oil as a supplement, but I really never heard that it could be used as an appetite stimulant - so GREAT tip ! Which coco oil did you use?

| That is great to hear! I started researching different approaches to feeding dogs before I adopted my current "kids", but am still new to the game. My current vet has a combination holistic-traditional practice, so she has been a great resource for me. I purchased an organic, virgin, unrefined oil from Sprouts (which is like a smaller, more budget-friendly Whole Foods we have in California). It is their own brand, and their "plain-wrap" stuff is usually quite high quality. My vet just told me to put a few drops on their food, so I drizzle a very small amount (maybe a 1/4 to a 1/2 teaspoon) for their breakfast and dinner. My little girl's name is Coco, so we enjoy joking that she is a Coco Cannibal, now that she is consuming Coco oil
