| My boys liver shunt My darling Darcy took a turn for the worst and to cut a long story short he was diagnosed with Liver shunt. My vet advised surgery which would cost £5000. I researched this condition and was horrified to read that with just medication I may only have him for about 10 more months, surgery was high risk and the dogs that I had read about that had had the surgery were fine for a couple of years then died with kidney failure. I was horrified till I found a website that claimed to be able to help. Darcy was as I thought a quiet dog when infact was suffering from depression, he never played with my 5 other dogs and very rarely wagged his tail. (His tolerance to medication was poor as I found out when pain relief was administered. Within half an hour he was unconscious, this did not bode well for surgery.) The website I found told me to put him on a raw meat and veg diet with certain supplements. Darcy is very small now weighing 3 kilo and a very fussy eater. He would not eat raw meat but devoured the veggies so instead of raw meat we give him baby food which we were told not ideal but much better than tinned dog food or kibble. Within days of the diet change and supplements Darcy's tail was never still, he was bright eyed, glossy coat and plays with his 5 friends. He gained 1/2 a kilo which was huge for his size. I took him of the meds the vet prescribed when I changed his diet and he has not looked back since and it has been nearly 3 months now since we first got diagnosed and he hasn't been back to the vets. Long may his well being continue. |
