| I have ficus trees in the house that are over 30 years old. They are not poisonous, although eating the tiny fruit they produce in the spring could cause gastric upset. They are not a true fig, so not poisonous. I got rid of my other plants because they were poisonous to dogs. Flowering plants are usually very dangerous. Your new dog probably won't bother a potted plant, but a fallen leaf or flower on the floor is likely to be attractive to taste or chew. Even outdoors, I have to watch my boys closely. Azaleas for instance, which are very toxic, are prevalent here in Virginia.

| I think the issue is usually with puppies. They will put anything in their mouths much like a human baby. The dog is two. Hardly a pup but still keep an eye out. If the plants are in a place she can't get to, or the pot is high, there is no reason to get rid of the plants. Usually a dropped leaf indoors is much easier to spot, so be diligent in picking them up. Outside is different. Sago palm seeds are extremely toxic, but they need to be eaten to be poisonous. Our neighbor at MIL's house had one. They ended up taking them out but Uni and my fosters never tried to eat one. It just depends on the dog. You will know once you get to know her better.

| capt_noonie to the rescue! Thank you sooo much for all your posts. My plants are all big & heavy & within her reach. I will watch her like a hawk! & she will be in her pen & free th only roam my closed kitchen when I sleep. She is very well trained by her owner & for the 2 hrs we spent together, she followed me everywhere. Of course she was surely confused. Between allergies & plants, the plants can go to my friend. I would never want to risk the doggies health. If she cares not, maybe I can keep my plants. I so appreciate all your advise...keep sending any thoughts. I am to decide by wednesday! Happy & want to be sure the rest of her Long life is with Me. |

| For me when I got dog's, I got rid of all my house plants. I was not willing to risk the dog's getting into them at all.

| Kept Both BUT..... I have a separate room for my plant that my cats are never allowed in. I have 3 cats now and they KNOW to stop at the door -- I always have my water spray bottle with me (never works on dogs). I am a single person in a 3 bedroom home so I have been able to keep my cactus. We live in Louisiana now and I am down to 1 beaver tail that thrives in all this rain -- something I never thought I would see again as they are a desert plant. ALL other plants went in the trash as they are not to be around cats. Instead, I planted catnip grasses for all the outdoor cats to enjoy at their will as we have a large colony in this area. Plants and animals mostly do not mix. I'd rather have my animals as they give me unconditional love and never care what I look like in the morning--they just want to be scratched, fed, and held - 2 weigh 12 pounds & 1 weighs 3 pounds. They all want held at the same moment. |

It usually only takes once for people to learn dogs and plants do NOT mix well! It is an expensive lesson, but most of the time, it isnt fatal, just painful and very expensive! I have dogs of all ages, all manners, all dispositions....the adventurous ones jump into the pots and dig the dirt out onto the floor....they pull the leaves off the bottom of the plant and throw them down where everyone else can enjoy all the excitement and confusion and fun!! My matriarch that used to actually "tell on" the bad behavior of the others, would actually bring me a leaf and drop it at my feet, then look at me as if to say, "better get in there! Those bat heads are getting into MAJOR trouble!" All plants were moved outside years ago, to the side yard, where dogs can not go.... | |

| THANK YOU EVERYONE! Happy New Year! I have learned so much from ALL & am still not sure about this girl. I only have a phone & it wouldn't upload her photo. She does not look like the healthy fluffy Yorkies here or I've seen, but more like a rescue dog that has been thru alot. I might be able to test babysit her as the owners go out of town this weekend. Between her health questions & my allergies & I never owned a dog (but learned so much from this experience) I an hesitant. I would take her for the weekend, if they let me AND I WILL PUT MY 3 BIG "NO HAVE" PLANTS IN A LOCKED ROOM, then take her for a vet check. She is a scraggly girl but sweet. I shall update again. I hope I am posting this right, so those that have helped me DO see my..."Thank you All & Have a Happy Ner Year!" |

| No doggie but Thank You! Thank you all once again. I did "Not" get the yorkie girl I asked q's about. She had to many questionable health problems for me (a first time owner) to take on. Her owners do seem very particular as to where her next home will be. I'm sure she will be fine & believe it was the best decision. Thank you for all your time responding & helping me! I will pass this Yorkie Chat group to them & hope they join in....Til the next time a yorkie comes my way....Kim :-) |
