| Liver shunt question. I'll admit up front that I wish I had joined this group before I got our Yorkie. Bad on me. Bought from a BYB. Didn't buy from the first one I talked to. Thought because they had taken the time and money to vet properly and removed dew claws it was a good choice. He also seemed to love the parents and had no qualms about us seeing them. Dad was a little larger than standard but we were hoping for larger pup. (Around 10 pounds but she's turned out like mom and 5 pounds at 7 1/2 months) That being said we found out she has luxating patella in both back legs. After being on here, I looked it up and suspected it from her skipping. Had her checked during spay. Going to be assessed by a specialist since our vet doesn't do those surgeries. But now that I've been on here some, I'm seeing so much about liver shunts I'm stressing out about that. Will a bile test for sure find one if present? And what other tests should we have done to ensure this pup is healthy? What percentage of dogs even have liver shunts? Did text the breeder about the LP since I felt that was the responsible thing to do. Never heard back from him. Which is suspicious since I had sent pictures and updates before and he always got back to me. Hope he didn't know and kept breeding anyway. Sigh! Last edited by Maccsc; 11-06-2015 at 08:08 AM. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I don't know about the %, but if you're at all worried I'd do a shunt test.

| after talking to people here, i decided to get bat on my puppies at 6 months to just to make sure they dont have it. i was paranoid too.. lol one of my puppy, nami, was found to have luxating patella on both legs, and she's only 7 months old. i purchased her overseas from this show breeder. i was recommended her by other breeders i knew since they also purchased their dogs from her and was found healthy. i dont know what it was.. maybe she was desperate on money. before i got nami, i asked her series of questions, and she said there was nothing wrong with her, and that she was perfectly healthy. but when she came to me, something wasn't quite right... her weight was off.. and vet thought she may have had luxating patella on one of her knees too, and i was referred to see a specialist. she was 5 months when she came to me.. i thought i'd wait to call the specialist since she was so young and i wanted her to gain some weight before anything, since she was only 2 lbs. (breeder said she was about 3lbs.. at the time) when i confronted the breeder, she finally admitted saying that.. oh yeah she was found to have a little knee problem, but that shouldnt be any problem, most dogs get stronger and get over it... and she should be fine breeding, if she was to breed with a pup with good knees.. (seriously? wtf. i thought she'd atleast tell me not to breed her since lp is genetic and her pups are to have the same...) 2 months passed and i noticed that nami would limp and lift her leg more.. so i thought i'd give a specialist call and what do you know.. when i go in for consultation, she was found with luxating patella on both of her knees, both of them being grade 3.. .i thought my heart sunk. i almost broke out crying cuz i felt so bad for her.. today is only her 6th day after her operation and she seems to be healing well. the doctor i saw did really good work on her now i just hope that she will be pain free and will live a normal dog life. oh... when she was 6 months though, i did bat on her and she passed and she was found normal.. thank god... but i'm sorry to rant... and i hope your puppy doesn't have luxating patella.. it just makes me furious now when there are irresponsible breeders lying and not taking any responsibilities for their pups.. |

| Update We had Sophie tested before scheduling her knee surgery and her bile acid came back at 65. Looks like a possible shunt. We've decided to put off the knee surgery. Saddened but just don't have the resources for the now 3 or more surgeries we'd be looking at. When she starts showing symptoms of the shunt or pain from the knee, we'll be faced with the decision to humanely euthanize her. We are hoping that's way down the road. We do plan on trying to manage both with meds and diet as long as we can. |

http://www.vet.utk.edu/clinical/sacs...2013-04-10.pdf Are you positive she needs knee surgery? You say you went to a specialist...was it a board certified specialist or a vet who does orthopedic surgeries? I have found that a lot of vets look at knees on yorkies as a money maker....many of the boarded surgeons (actually I think most) don't necessarily recommend it unless the pup is having major issues. You might want to think about further testing to rule out a shunt instead of knee surgery if she is not having real serious issues with her knees. All of my pups have LP and unless they tear a ligament or develop serious issues with them, there won't be surgery. Honestly, these days most yorkies have some degree of LP.

| Hi, so sorry you and your pup is going through this. I totally agree with Lady Jane. I hope things work out for you.

| She was rated at a 4 on one knee and a 3 on the other. Wasn't going to have them both done at once. Was going to have the one the Dr suggested we do first and wait on the second. Everything I've looked at shows the shunt surgery to run 4 to 5 thousand. Twice the cost of both knees. |

| Thanks for the info on the mvd though. She doesn't show any of the signs of a shunt except for being a pee pot. The next test suggested is the dye or an ultrasound. I'm thinking the vet we saw just does orthopedics and may not be board certified hence the less expensive cost. We do have to take cost into account. |

That is a pretty high cost for liver shunt repair....but again, you may not be facing that.
