| spaying, i just dont know what to do help. should I have gotten my yorkies spayed by now(18 months)??? I'm not breeding the two, and at three pounds, I never would, however, I just kept putting it off due to their size. if they were males, I would feel much better about it, but being so invasive with the spaying, I'm absolutely scared to death. I just kind of thought they would grow more or at least not seem so dainty, the one especially. puppies get spayed all the time at this age being so little right? I just keep having thoughts what if something happens since they are so small. have everyone else had positive experiences with spaying 3lb dogs? |

| I know many people who have had their small girls spayed without problem. Make sure you have the pre-op bloodwork done in advance and discuss the anesthesia protocol with your vet to make sure the best is used. Here is a thread about the anesthesia protocol: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-protocol.html It's natural to worry. I was a mess when my big boy was neutered, and I wimped out with my second boy and had the breeder take care of everything before we brought him home at 8 months.

| The last time I got on this site and encouraged someone to spay their little girl, dont worry, everything will be fine, blah, blah, blah....the dog died on the table from anesthesia overdose....so I have not from that day forward encouraged anyone to get their little babies spayed/neutered. THAT is just one more thing hanging around my neck that I wish was not there! I will say, when I have gotten my babies spayed/neutered, each one was done individually....I have 3 tiny little girls here and none of them have been spayed. They are not around any males so this is not a problem....they seldom even go outside to the patio....strictly indoor babies...weighing in at a whopping 2 lbs..... My vet is excellent and I have complete trust in her and her ability....but if something WERE to happen following my decision to have these girls spayed, I would never forgive MYSELF. This is a decision YOU have to make for yourself and your little dog. I do not have to worry about breeding issues....these tiny little dogs are not ever around males, and when in heat, I protect my furniture with tiny little panties for the girls!.....but if I had them all out and about in public, it may make a difference in my decision. In Europe, they do not spay/neuter their dogs like we do here...and they have this breeding and population explosion under control and their dogs live healthy long lives....I just read this in an article someplace.....I know for a fact a bunch of the spay/neuter hype here in the USA is to try to control the explosion of strays and pound puppies....apparently they have that issue under better control in Europe than we do? I sell all my puppies on a spay/neuter contract, for that very reason.....but I dont sell tinies, I keep them! I have had various numbers of altered/unaltered dogs all my life and they have all lived long lives.... So good luck with your decision....do what makes YOU comfortable with your decision and any outcomes you may have as a result of that decision. |

| Well, after reading what Yorkiemom1 wrote, I am not sure what to say. Yorkiemom1 is an expert as far as I am concerned. I always agree with her. If I had read her post on the subject of spaying little ones I wouldn't have taken a chance with Zoey. Zoey weighs 2-1/2 pounds and is a year old. I had her spayed at 7 months and she almost died the first day after her spaying. The vet put a collar on her and she got dehydrated because and wouldn't eat or drink. I took it off her after a few hours, but it was too long a time without her eating or drinking so I had to rush her back to the vet's office and they gave her an IV........thank the Lord, they pulled her through. If you do decide to spay her, watch her like a hawk, and don't let them put a collar on her if she doesn't like it. They have little jerseys you can use to protect the incision. Whatever you decide......wishing you all the best with her. |

| Spaying is performed to eliminate females from getting mammary gland tumors and Pyometra. My first 2 girls I did not get spayed, they were not tiny babies. I didn't spay then because to me they were babies and small, I was scared to"put them under the knife". At age 13 y/o my first one got Pyometra, her uterus erupted, puss went through her bloodstream she under went a full hysterectomy, was sent home and for nine days I watched her die before my eyes. Yes I kept calling my vet everyday to tell him what was going on, took her back several times, but she died anyway. I would wish anyone to go through what I did, watching your baby die...6 months later 10 y/o my 2nd girl got Pyometra, I now knew the symptoms and rushed her to ER clinic, she lived for 6 months. My last 2 girls I had spayed before their first heat, advised by my NEW vet at age 6 months old. I advise spay if you are not going to breed, spay to avoid Pyometra and mammary gland tumors, again, these pups were not tiny babies, the 2 I had spayed as adults weighed 10 lbs the other was 17 lbs. The 2 that were not spayed as adults both weighed 13 lbs each. Speak to your vet about spaying a 2 lb pup. I advocate for spaying for elimination of above health risks, and I speak from personal experience. Good luck with your decision.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I understand your concerns...it's scary to put your babies under. Get the pre-op blood work done for sure and if that checks out, it should all be well. If you're worried about invasiveness, why not look around and find a vet who uses laser...?

Excellent suggestion/option!!! JUMP right on this!!!!! Also, a lot of vets do NOT routinely have IV access on animals undergoing surgery....I always insist they have an IV during surgery, and continue post op until I pick the dog up...that will take care of fluid loss as well as sugar drop caused by stress from surgery. | I struggled with the same fears before spaying my 3 pound girl. I actually waited for her to gain to 3pds before I agreed to the precedure. She still seemed so tiny and I was panicking the morning of her surgery. I lost a tiny 12 yr old girl 2yrs ago not because of spaying but due to a wrong dicision I made. I will always see her going through her last days that came so suddenly. This was still in my thoughts making it even harder to put this tiny through surgery. But I knew there could be a risk of cancer if I chose not to spay my new little girl. We had already lost a girl to cancer too. So I decided to go ahead and now I'm glad I did. Hopefully our girl will live a long and healthy life. She came through without any incidents spunky and mischievous as ever the next day.We had to keep her in her little crate to slow her down.
