| Bumps on back and allergies? Hello everyone, I've been having some issues with one of my yorkies. I have 3, Chopstix, Wilbur, and Chowchow. Wilbur and Chowchow are brothers and are 3 years old. Wilbur is having some problems with his skin. Chowchow is totally fine. But about 6 months ago, I notice a red bump on his lower back. It was red and was filled with pus. Unfortunately, I combed through it and it popped. Ever since that, these bumps started appearing. It appeared on his lower back mostly, his skin is very pinkish red, then after a few days, they seem to dry out and turn scabby. These bumps even have a weird smell to it. During this time, all 3 were eating Blue Buffalo. They receive treats like milkbone and jerky daily. They also get Cosequin ds for dogs and nutri-cal supplement. Since the cosequin are pretty big tablets, they only get half of the tablet. Not on a daily basis, I give them this vitamin every other day. As for flea treatment, all 3 are on K9 advantage. And as for shampoo, I use the aloe medicated shampoo purchased from the vet. Well, we been to the vet and the the doctor said it is probably allergies. They prescribe some medication, I don't quite remember. Wilbur finish the meds and it is not any help. During this time, we had a mobile groomer come to groom the yorkies and she noticed his bumps and said she was also having the issue with her yorkie. She said she used gold bond powder for the bumps and it helped her yorkie skin and now her yorkie doesn't have any bumps. We've also tried the gold bond powder. It did seem to get somewhat better for about a few weeks. But his bumps still wouldn't completely go away. So we went back to the vet about 3 weeks ago. The vet still said it was probably allergies. This time, he prescribe more medication, told us to switch our food from Blue Buffalo to Science Diet and no more jerky treats. We also notice that when we apply the K9 advantage flea treatment on Wilbur, his skin got really red after a few times. The vet recommended NexGuard. Wilbur took a NexGuard table 3 weeks ago. But now, since we've followed the doctor's advise, the bumps on Wilbur's skin is still appearing. I just got done combing through his hair and the bumps on his lower back are scabby and crusty. We have another appointment this Saturday, so we want to get him tested and see what is really the issue. allergies or some kind of underlying issue? Have anyone have similar issues? |

| Caleb used to get scabby skin. He is prone to allergies, after we've walked in the fields or woods. A good quality, 100% Coconut oil rubbed into his skin has worked the best for us. When he used to be really itchy and scabby, I'd rub lots in, now just a little on my hands rubbed in, keeps his skin under control. The day before, he's due a bath, I really rub the oil all over him, wait awhile, then use a towel to rub some of the excess off. It's made a big difference to his coat and skin. Vet said he'd always be prone to allergies, poor fella lifts his tiny legs to pee on a plant and gets spots around his penis. Squats on the wrong plant and gets an itchy bum. Hope you find something that works for Wilbur. Caleb also can't tolerate any bad quality treats.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | What meds were given? Sounds to me like this kiddo has/had pyoderma, which is an overgrowth of the naturally occurring staph intermedius - causing the bacterial skin infection. When that happens, Simplicef should be given x 30 days. A skin scraping is done to diagnose pyoderma, very simply done. When allergies are present, the skin can become inflamed/irritated and out of balance...then the bacteria goes crazy and you have an infection. | I am not sure what meds were given, but I know one of them was for the itchiness. I just spoke to the vet and made an appointment to bring Wilbur in tomorrow morning for a skin scraping. |

| We went to the vet this morning and the doctor said it is bacteria that's why he's on antibiotics. This time, she prescribed Simplicef, Derma pro 60, and also Chlorhexidine shampoo. Told me to bathe Wilbur 2 twice a week with it. In the past, the vet prescribed Zydaclin oral drops but that didn't do anything. I still have a bottle left. I guess we'll see how this time and go back to the vet for a checkup in two weeks. |
