| Health concerns/Questions Hello all, relatively new yorkie owner, General Sherman will be 1 years old in just a few days. 2 concerns, first I had to express his anal glands for the second time in a few months. I feed him Halo Spot's Stew Dry Small Breed Turkey, Duck, and Pheasant food. He gobbles it up right away, seems to love it, and I never worry about him not finishing all his food, it has 6.5% max crude fiber content. Should I try another food, has anyone had issues similar with their yorkies? Second, I was bathing him the other day and noticed two small bumps that were scabbed over under his snout on his chin, should I be concerned? They don't seem to bother him, could it be allergies or bug bites? Any help and or advice would be great and thanks in advance, glad to have joined the community. Thanks! Alex |

| Have you spoken to your vet about his anal glands? If you feel the food might be the cause, perhaps you can try bland diet for a bit to see if it makes any changes. Are you giving him any supplements? As for the scabs... I'd say keep an eye on it. If it gets bigger, doesn't heal, etc... then take him to the vet to have it checked out. Could be some sort of infection. |

Thank you, I have yet to speak to the vet about either issue yet, partly because the last few months have been hectic with moving, and also he seems pretty happy. I'm not sure if the food is causing the gland issue as I've read that small breeds in particular can have these issues no matter what food they eat. He's due for some shots in September, so it won't be that long before he's back at the vet. | |

| Thank you, I'm not sure if its the food, I've read that most small breeds have anal gland issues, does anyone else here have similar problems? The only supplement I give him is an omega supplement for his skin and coat. He's due for a few shots in September so I'll definitly ask the vet than, was just wondeirng if anyone has had to switch foods because of similar issues. |

| There are many Yorkies in this forum who require manual expression of their glands. I don't know if a diet change would help in all cases. Might cause other problems since finding the right diet for each dog can be tricky. Regarding the bumps on his chin, I would inspect them closely and make sure they are not ticks, some of which are very tiny. Although ticks are usually itchy and annoying to the dog.

| Diets with higher fiber can help with anal gland issues. It's usually a food intolerance or allergic when anal gland issues are recurrent. I'd try higher fiber. You can crush up all bran cereal and add a little to the food. I read that on petdiets. You might want to go to that site and search anal glands in the ask the nutritionist section because she's talked about this in the context of diet.

| Thank you, regarding the bumps on the chin, no ticks, and the scabs fell off pretty easily revealing little red abrasions which I cleaned. They don't seem to be bothering him at all, probably bother him now that I noticed them and got worried and fussed with them. I'll certainly check out the website and check changing his diet, thank you for all the help. |
