| allergies Has anyone had experience with their dog having food allergies? The vet told me my dog has food allergies and to feed him only one kind of food for two weeks to see if he improves, but my research online says it really takes 12 weeks to see if they improve. Does it really take that long to see if he gets better? It's been a little over a week and he doesn't seem better...do I still have to wait two more months? It's hard to see him uncomfortable. I would have thought he would have improved a bit by now. He's eating Taste of the Wild buffalo and venison formula. |

| You should be feeding him a dog food with "limited ingredients" My Cody has allergies, my vet said to feed limited ingredients, I give him Natural Balance Limited Ingredients, how ever, he doesn't have food allergies, he has environmental allergies, my vet advised to still keep him on limited ingredients. You should get many responses, this is a hot topic on YT. Good luck.

| Taste of the wild is limited I think. No grain but mostly potatoes. I don't know if I didn't search properly but I didn't see a whole lot regarding food allergies. I'm thinking of trying fish based food next. I'm just not sure if I should do it now or wait the full 12 weeks. Did not my vet tell me the right info? She said only wait 2 weeks not 12. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You are very correct...a classic elimination diet is usually done for around 12 weeks....def not just 2! So I'd give this some more time, honestly. Food allergies are very, very rare...what is making your vet come to this conclusion? Read more about allergies here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

| I thought it was a bacterial infection so I took him to the vet but she looked at around his mouth and saw his ears were red and irritated. At first it was just around the mouth but now it's around the eyes too. He itches and rubs his face on furniture and the floor. It's not severe but his hair is getting a bit sparse in those areas. I do not want to take him to the vet again. I spent $200 for her to tell me wrong info. It's hard to believe he's allergic to bison and venison. Chicken - maybe. But bison with no grain??? I've done research and other than bacterial hot spots, not sure what else it could be. Any ideas or suggestions? |

| I read your post Wylie's mom. So it can't be bacterial - it does not look like ringworm. Just around the opening around the front part of his mouth and around the eyes. It can't be fleas because he's been treated and he doesn't itch anywhere else. I really don't think it's topical or airborne allergies. I guess then it has to be food? He also chews and eats a lot of things so he throws up every once in a while and he's had diarreah and mucus the past week. But he's also been chewing up a lot of things lately too. I think than my main option is to continue with the strict diet for another two months.... |

I also find it very tough to believe he's allergic to bison and venison but who knows. Why are you ruling out enviro (dust, pollens, mites etc)...when this is the most common in dogs, and very common in yorkie allergies? I'm not clear on why you're ruling this out. You could try medicating w/ OTCs...Vet Derms will use mostly either Claritin or Zyrtec as those are 24hr pills. If you can't figure this out, I'd totally stop wasting money w/ a vet generalist and get to a Vet Derm ASAP, who will get you squared away right off the bat, generally. They aren't cheap, but if this is affecting your kiddo's quality of life, it has to be done, ya know?

| I didn't think of environmental factors because he's mostly an inside dog. He hardly goes out. My entire family has allergies so we are careful about opening windows, etc during spring and have an air purifier as well. But maybe it could be.... Maybe that would make more sense than food. He recently developed this - started around May. Spring allergies?? I'll continue with the food until the 12 weeks are up. I'm going to try to avoid going to the vet dermatologist. Maybe at the last resort if all else fails and it becomes more severe. Thanks. I'll definitely keep environmental allergies in mind. |

If they started in the spring, then yes, I'd be suspecting seasonal allergies...not food. If his mouth/ears/face are red and irritated, have hot spots, or is breaking skin anywhere....that would feel pretty miserable and those symptoms should really be treated with either OTCs or Atopica or Apoquel or Temaril-P or something...

My Shih Tzu has envioronmental allergies and food sensitivities . She had many issues which included extremely watery eyes , anal gland issues , soft stool . I finally found her food .. Natural Balance L.I.D Sweet Potato & Bison .It is limited ingredients and grain free . Wow ,it has worked wonders for her . No more issues .. I feel so happy for her , she was terrified going to the vet every month to get her anal glands expressed .. | |
