| Switch to homemade food? So I tried everything and after yesterday's scare I am ready to make Chewie (3 and a half year old stubborn yorkie )homemade food just so that he eats. Let's start with the beginning. He started with Fromm more than 3 years ago , and when he didn't want it anymore; I started switching to Acana, then Orijen, then Nature Variety, adding Stella & Chewy's frozen patty's on top of kibble and he would eat in the beginning and then, in time, he would stop eating. I made once chicken soup, and gave him the boiled chicken breast; first day he ate it, next day so and so, the third day he wouldn't touch it . He has some days when he doesn't touch the food ( he is free fed) and the he throws up bile. Yesterday he threw up and then he fainted ( I think), he wasn't moving so we rushed him to the doctor where he was fine. They gave him an anti nausea medication and he was lethargic all afternoon and he would refuse to eat. This morning he seemed better, I gave him a couple of egg yolks which he gobbled up. My concern is if I start to give him homemade food, his teeth will suffer ( he hates toothbrushes, although I bought 2 different flavors of toothpaste). For those that feed your yorkie wet food, how do you solve this problem? |

Home cooked food does or soft food does not make your dog's teeth worse. If your dog hates toothbrushes, you can use a piece of gauze over your finger and "brush" his teeth that way. A water additive may also help. We use TropiClean water additive and like it. I would not change foods as often as you are in a dog that is vomiting bile. I would try one particular type of food and stick with it. We home cook, but we follow recipes and each dog eats different ingredients.

| Well hard food does not clean there teeth so soft food would not be worse or bad for his teeth. If you want to home cook you need to make sure you are using a recipe from a vet nutritionist and a supplement. You can use petdiets.com or balanceit.com. I would be worried switching food so often. Sometimes they will have days where they just don't want to eat.

| I changed 4 brands in 3 years, I don't think that is too often... I know sometimes they don't want to eat, my mom has a dog and he has a day every few months when he just won't eat and he is fine. But Chewie thows up if he doesn't eat, and I don't think that cam be good. About soft vs hard food, all that I read was saying that hard food doesn't stick to teeth as much as soft one, and yorkies have a predisposition for tartar acumulation...Until now we didn't had any problems, last year the vet said his teeth look very good compared to other yorkies his age, and I would hate if he would develop problems because of the food change... I will try the water aditive but I don't think I will have any luck with the cloth theeth brushing, because I have a baby toothbrush and he runs away when he sees it. I don't get it, all yorkies are like this, running when they see something new or that they don't like? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It's a myth that hard food benefits the teeth in any way...think of it this way, does hard food benefit/clean your/our teeth? Nope. Food breaks down and gets into the teeth crevices whether it's soft or hard. So, soft food is no worse for the teeth, you'll be fine as far as that. For teeth in general though, why not add Healthy Mouth to the regimen, it will help. It's one of the few things that is VOHC approved, btw. I would get a full blood panel on this kiddo bc something is wrong here for his appetite to be this off. It's also *very* odd to faint after just a vomit episode. Just in case, look up Addison's Disease. Also, I'd be asking the vet if you should try Pepcid every day to ease stomach issues. Does his tummy ever make gurgling noises? How is the poo?

| They didn't do blood work this time. He had an episode last year when he was shaking all of a sudden and they did blood work then (about 10 months ago) and everything was fine. The vet said they could do blood work and xray but she wasn't very convinced they would find anything. His poo is fine, he goes out twice a day, and is well formed not soft and not too hard. I haven't heard his stomach to make noises... |

| As Wylie's Mom said, any pup vomiting that frequently should have blood work. I would probably discuss having bile acid testing done as well. "Passing out" is simply not normal. Please consider having testing done...a vet cannot diagnose your pup with blinders on and that is what is going on without blood work IMHO.

| He is not vomiting that frequently, maybe once every few months, but mainly because I see that he doesn't eat and I trick him with egg yolk or cheese to open his appetite. Anyway, is there anything special I should request for the blood work? Like test they don't do usually? Because like I said they did a blood work less than a year ago and everything was fine according to the vet. Any other tests except a barium X-Ray and fecal ? |

YT 2000 Club Member | dog Be careful with fatty foods. That pancreatitis happens and I think it is from fat. I would definitely have my Yorkie to the vet if passing out. I feed mine wellness he gets wet and dry. If he won't eat it later on he does. Yorkies get sick and need care right away . Otherwise it could be too late if you wait. |
